“Labor of Love”
Reviewed August 31, 2009

When we drove into Lansing we thought 'Oh-oh, this could be a problem." The town is obviously struggling through the economic downturn with closed shops and a worn look. However, McGarity's Inn has been remodeled and unless you like to stay at the Hilton, a great find. Yes, you do climb very steep stairs, but the room is worth it. One entire wall is brick and there are beautifully crafted wood floors, the biggest bathtub we have ever seen and a scattering of antiques here and there. There is a microwave, small fridge and dishes, cooking and serving items and lots of towels. There is a phone in the hall for local calls that you have to use because it's from yesteryear and how often can you say you used a truly retro phone? The bed was a bit hard, but the room was quiet and the parking was free (be sure to get your car off the main road or you will get a ticket). We ate breakfast at the restaurant right on the water (can't remember the name) and it offered a view you won't soon forget, which was good because the hotel river view is only a small slice. All in all, if you want something regional that isn't the standard hotel, but a bit quirky (in a good way) and obviously a labor of love with some very nice touches, then you will be pleased.

I loved the location. I loved the room - it was so cute! The brick wall added character and I loved the tile turtle in the bathroom. The shower was very modern and very clean. The bed was unbelievably comfortable! I also liked the private entrance. I missed the fact there was no breakfast, but we have friends in Lansing so we ate there anyhow.

Stayed for 4 days to visit friends. The owners did a wonderful job restoring and updating an old building in downtown Lansing.. One block to the Mississippi River. On Main Street with lots of neat shops (arts & crafts, souvenirs, art/frames, restaurants, etc.) I recommend walking the 2 blocks to The Safehouse - nice, nonsmoking pub with friendly locals. Clancy's restaurant on the river served an excellent steak.

One warning - if you stay here, you will be bringing your luggage up a steep staircase.

  • Liked — Quiet, relaxing, great location

On our way from Chicago to Minneapolis, my wife and I did stay for 1 night at Mc Garrity's Inn. They do have just 4 rooms. We picked the one on the rear side, with a nice view over the Mississippi river. The room has its own bathroom and a kitchenette. The room is furnsihed with "antiques", the bathroom suits all contemporary needs. Everything was very tidy and in excellent shape.

The reception was warm and friendly - as were all the people we met in Lansing. Don't miss to try the pizza at the Old Bank Pub, one block up the street. Nice service in a special interior. We would definitly come back - even for a longer stay.

  • Liked — The nice and costly restauration of this historic building and its rooms.
  • Disliked — Nothing
