When we drove into Lansing we thought 'Oh-oh, this could be a problem." The town is obviously struggling through the economic downturn with closed shops and a worn look. However, McGarity's Inn has been remodeled and unless you like to stay at the Hilton, a great find. Yes, you do climb very steep stairs, but the room is worth it. One entire wall is brick and there are beautifully crafted wood floors, the biggest bathtub we have ever seen and a scattering of antiques here and there. There is a microwave, small fridge and dishes, cooking and serving items and lots of towels. There is a phone in the hall for local calls that you have to use because it's from yesteryear and how often can you say you used a truly retro phone? The bed was a bit hard, but the room was quiet and the parking was free (be sure to get your car off the main road or you will get a ticket). We ate breakfast at the restaurant right on the water (can't remember the name) and it offered a view you won't soon forget, which was good because the hotel river view is only a small slice. All in all, if you want something regional that isn't the standard hotel, but a bit quirky (in a good way) and obviously a labor of love with some very nice touches, then you will be pleased.
