We visited with some friends as we were staying in Sturminster Marshall. We used to visit the Anchor in the early 2000's when we lived in Sturminster but sadly the revitalised place went bust...and the lights stayed out. So we were delighted to see that many years later it has taken the crown from the Red Lion in Sturminster for food.

The dishes we had were unusual and freshly prepared including some great fish & chips and a good banger. A few pints of a local ale washed down the who shebang and we left as very satisfied punters.

We've lived in the area for 4 years and have always intended to try the Anchor but have never quite got there. Last night we decided to give it a try and we weren't disappointed. I had the pork belly which was delicious and 2 of our party had the tapas to start, which we all thought was a great idea, and apparently tasted great too. Other meals selected included a burger which looked and tasted good and lamb tagine which not only tasted great but was plentiful in its size. The wine was good and not ridiculously priced as in some of the other local gastro pubs....I wasn't sure quite what to expect of the place as we'd heard a lot of descriptions about it however I can report that the decor was cosy and welcoming, the staff friendly and efficient and the atmosphere buzzing and fun. I loved all the different little dining areas, although the place was busy you could still hear the conversation within your own party. Great service and great food....we will definitely be back again soon.

We called into the Anchor spontaneously a few weeks ago, and had the lobster and cod thermidor, which was outstanding. We returned last night to indulge, but sadly the thermidor was off the menu. However, this was not a loss as the 8oz steak was outstanding. One of the best steaks I have eaten in a while. The portions are generous and the atmosphere at the Anchor is consistently good. The staff are friendly, professional and knowledgeable on the menu.

Having taken a lovely ride out to Shapwick, a place you go to rather than pass through, we arrived at the attractive Anchor in the middle of the village. Having seen an advertisement for their new Tapas menu we were disappointed with both the type and selection on offer so elected for the grilled tuna with salad and the grilled Pollack over samphire with potato gnocchi. The Pollack was perfect, the samphire plentiful and the gnocchi average, the Tuna unfortunately was so over salted to be I edible that it was sent back, the waitress dealt with the issue without fuss and returned with the chef's apologies and an offer of replacement, perfect service. All in all a nice experience in comfortable surroundings with laid back professional staff, well worth a second chance.

We have recently rediscovered the Anchor and have been 5 times in as many weeks, due to the great fish/seafood selection and the lovely staff - the food & service have been excellent every time. The new tapas menu is a brilliant idea - we've been having a selection as starters, which works really well but there is more than enough choice to have as a complete meal too. Love that you are trying new things and the daily changing fish dish is right up my street! We will be back again & again :)
