“Perfect Place for a Fall Day”

Villages of Van Buren County

Attraction details
Owner description: Off the beaten path, but near to history, nature and the spirit of America's heartland. Visitors say life in the Villages moves at a slightly different pace, that friendliness is a virtue among residents and that village heritage is sacred ground. The Villages are a unique cluster of towns in Van Buren County, Iowa which is located just 20 miles South of Fairfield (Hwy. 34), 45 Miles East of Ottumwa (Hwy. 63) And 34 miles West of Hwy 27 (Avenue of the Saints.) It is simple to relax as you drive through the countryside because you will not find a stop light or a fast-food restaurant in the entire county! Take a step back in time to enjoy a leisurely picnic in a park, hike the trails, stroll through the shops, enjoy the historic architecture, or relax and take in the solitude and beauty of the surroundings.

“Perfect Place for a Fall Day”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

We loved the Amish dinner at Sunrise Bakery. The landscape and the villages are pretty, although we were disappointed in Bonaparte. It is kind of run down and nothing was open.

“A lot going on in a little place”
Reviewed June 28, 2012

The Villages of Van Buren County always has something going on that's lots of fun. August has the Bike Van Buren, October has the Scenic Drive festival, there is canoeing on the Des Moines river, hiking and biking trails through the forests. Swim in the lake, fish, rent a paddle boat at Indian Lake park. Strawberry festival in June. Huge 4th of July party in Keosauqua and Bonaparte. Bentonsport has festivals in May, September and October. Wineries, history, and the scenic Des Moines River. Eat at Bonaparte's Retreat. Sleep at the Mason House Inn B&B in Bentonsport or the Bonaparte Inn in Bonaparte. Take a class with the Villages Folk School, the old time skills are taught. It is was wonderful place.....Iowa's hidden secret. Worth finding.
