Sheraton Iowa City Hotel
Ranked #3 of 7 Hotels in Iowa City
Reviewed June 28, 2007

Pros: Great location and proximity to downtown attractions; valet parking; many services (business, restaurant, etc.); good bedding; rollaways available; helpful staff

Cons: Some common areas are dingy and smell like cigarette smoke; pool is chilly and is 4-5 feet deep (too deep for very small children); hot tub was broken; bathroom is very small and door opens awkwardly for bathroom use; room seemed overpriced at $120/night.

It is not very suitable for families with young kids stopping off the interstate. I would recommend it as a decent place for people traveling without children who want to enjoy the downtown. I feel the regular rooms would be a value at under $100/night.

My son and I went on a businees trip with my wife here. The staff is quite possibly the friendliest of any Starwood property we've stayed at. Upon check-in, my son was given a toy by the staff. The valet service was likewise superb. The best thing about this hotel for families is the pool (heated and very clean!) and the playground right outside the hotel. The location is also terrific with lots of dining and bar options right outside the hotel. If you're visiting Iowa City or driving through on I-80, this property is exceptional for business travelers and families alike.

The Sheraton Iowa City is nestled in the heart of downtown Iowa City. The location can not be beat in Iowa City, but what really makes this hotel special is the staff. They learn your name at check-in and continue to use it throughout your stay as though they have known you for years. I always feel so welcome as if I'm staying at a friends house. The hotel isn't the newest hotel in Iowa City, but it is certainly the most experienced when it comes to customer service!

Again, there are only a few good things that I can say about the Sheraton in Iowa City.
First is the location. The location is great and being downtown in Iowa City is a great plus.
The also have a great staff here. Professional and friendly, it was a pleasure to deal with them.
The hotel restaurant is also very good. We had dinner here one night, and we were very pleased with the service and the quality of the food.
This is where the good ends. Our room was in terrible shape. The carpet was worn, dirty and in places it was coming up. The furniture has seen better days.
Part of the headboard was broken off; the sofa in the room was so stained and dirty that we didn’t want to sit on it. The drapes were old and had holes in them. The room was also very dark, and even with all the lights on it was still dark. The bulbs were dim and one of the lamps didn’t work.
The bed was terrible. While the Sheraton website states they have the Sweet Sleeper bed, this isn’t the case. The sheets and other bedding were from the Sweet Sleeper, but the mattress was old and thin.
Very small bathrooms here. While it appears that they have spent some money on the bathrooms with new tile, mirror etc, they are cramped.
With its location and number of rooms, it would be great if they would spend some money to improve this place. At one time this was the only hotel in downtown Iowa City, but that is no longer the case. After spending on night here, we moved to the new Hotel Vetro which is located right around the corner. What a great place.
Until the Sheraton invests some money here, we will stick to the new Hotel Vetro.

The Sheraton @ Iowa City is nicely situated in the downtown area with unique shops, pubs, restaurants and the University nearby. The staff at this hotel makes the visit an above average experience with their pleasant and attentive nature. The rooms are large and the comfy bed with multiple pillows was a nice surprise. There were some minor maintenance issues, which brings down my rating from excellent. Also, the hotel restaurant was good but not great. I arrived after 10 pm and the area restaurants had closed at that time, so I was desperate.

First off, the hotel is definitely conveniently located with many dining choices and small shops right outside. Parking is in the public garage next door ($8/day).

Upon check-in, I was given a "Preferred Guest" room, so I don't know if my room is any different from the rest. The check-in was quick and the front desk staff that I dealt with was very nice and thoughtful.

When I arrived at my room, it seemed nice at first, except for a persistant odor -- it's sort of what dirty damp towels would smell like and probably comes from the bathroom. The room is quite large (mine had 2 beds and faced the Ped. Mall). The bed was covered in a lush royal blue comforter. All seemed well until I settled down and noticed the flaws.

The bed: Once the comforter was pulled off, there is a beige chenille? blanket that is more grey than beige and seems to be thinned off due to years of service. The pillowcases are also very thin for the same reason. There were 5-6 pillows per bed, but none seems to be in new condition. Some had a hair or two on it from someone else. However, the bed is quite comfortable for me since it's on the firm side.

The bathroom, as mentioned by another reviewer, was very small and cramped. It's almost impossible to use the shower tub without closing the door. Everything works fine, but it just feels cheap. Toilet papers are the rough thin type. The towels however, are quite fresh and not aged like the linens.

There is a small refrigerator under the TV which is very convenient. Breakfast is not included normally, but I was given access to the Club Lounge where breakfast is provided. There is a good selections of bagels, bread, drinks, milk, etc., and the female attendant there was cheerful and polite.

The room does need new carpets and wallpaper badly as they appeared to have had decades of service. I found things on the carpet which suggest it wasn't vacuumed thoroughly.

I asked for a quiet room and it was indeed quiet as it was located in the middle of the hall and on the 7th floor. If you are concerned about noise, those close to the elevator (also where the vending and ice machines area) may be more noisy.

One more thing, there were only a scant # of cable channels which was another disappointment upon all the others I've mentioned.

Hard to believe this was the same hotel after it switched from being a Holiday Inn to a Sheraton.

Prices were much higher than comparable hotels (and from being a Holiday Inn)

Paid extra for breakfast....only to find that I had to pay more still if I wanted something to drink during breakfast!!! (HUH?!?!?) RIPOFF

At 1:30am the fire alarm went off and all the hotel guests had to evacuate for an hour.
Tryed to get them to reduce the room rate for the disturbance...The staff was no help.

Emailed Sheraton HQ to complain, no reply.

Never stayed there again!!!
