“gotta stay at the Brown Street Inn!”
Reviewed August 21, 2007

I love this bed and breakfast. My husband and I love to stay in B&B's when we get the chance. We recently visited the Brown Street Inn because we were in Iowa City for a marriage re-treat. We will definitely return to the Brown Street Inn, hopefully during football season! The place is spotless and very inviting. Our favorite part about the house was the front porch; we sat there for hours drinking wine and just relaxing. The inn is located in a quiet neighborhood and it also has a parking lot. A lot of B&B's that we've stayed at only have off street parking. The landscaping is done very nicely. We conversed with one of the owners through breakfast and had a great time. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful! Our room was cozy and had everything we needed. It even had a mini fridge, which was nice for our left over's from dinner and of course for our wine. The house is neatly decorated. The owner was very helpful when we asked about dining options; he recommended a place and gave us directions. I would recommend this place to anyone, we loved it!

This was our second year at the Brown Street Inn during the Iowa City Writer's Festival. Mark and Bob have thought of everything - plenty of plugs for computers, phone chargers, etc, bottled water, wine glasses, and water carafes at hand right outside your bedroom door, WI-FI, daily papers, a computer to print assignments on. These may sound like silly little things, but there are a lot of them.

They are wonderful hosts, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about iowa City.

Equally important, they care about the environment. They recycle, give you the option of reusing towels, buy locally whenever they can...

Going back this year was like meeting up with old friends. We'll stay there again for sure.

From the moment we drove up, we knew our stay was going to be nice, starting with plenty of off-the-street parking. The sound of trickling water as we approached the entrance door was "refreshing" to hear and the landscaping well tended. We were warmly greeted at the door and immediately felt comfortable. The decorating was inviting, very homey... that "come in and enjoy a cup of tea and a freshly baked cookie" feeling. Speaking of cookies...they were just out of the oven and being plated as we arrived. Yum! Our room was very nicely decorated and met all of our needs and more. The innkeepers have thought of everything to make staying with them a pleasant experience. While my husband was busy on his computer in our room, I found time daily to kick off my shoes and read a book in the downstairs wing-backed chair and ottoman, while listening to wonderfully soothing background music and drinking a cup of hot tea. With family in Iowa City, we definitely know where we will be staying again. Whether for 1 night or a week, you will thoroughly enjoy your stay...WE SURE DID!

This was my third year in Iowa City for a week-long workshop and I finally got the experience right, thanks to a friend's recommendation
that we stay at the Brown Street Inn. If home is where the heart is, this is where the heart is when you're away from home.

Having stayed previous years at the charmless Iowa House Hotel, the experience of a week at the Brown Street Inn was the difference between night and day. I'm psychologically allergic to B&Bs drowning in lace and Victoriana and this well-appointed, beautifully-maintained home was an oasis.

Lovely rooms, beautiful and comfy public spaces (especially a long, gorgeous front porch that overlooks the quiet, cobblestone street) are feathers in this B&B's cap. In addition, the Brown Street Inn owners pull off the delicate balance of making you feel welcome, remaining accessible yet giving guests plenty of space to spend time by themselves.

Extras include wonderful breakfasts, fresh-baked cookies in the afternoon and some more pragmatic perks not always seen at B&Bs, including a mini-fridge in the room, free wireless internet access and an "office" nook with access to a computer, fax machine and printer.

It has been my experience that good places attract good people and Mark and Rob, the wonderfully hospitable and terrifically fun owner/innkeeper duo, prove that to be true. We enjoyed the interaction with our fellow guests and chatting with the owners about the city, the neighborhood and life.

This is the rarest of things -- a B&B done right, across the board. In fact, I'll take a writing workshop in Iowa City again next year if for no other reason than to have an excuse to stay at the Brown Street Inn.

  • Liked — The owners were incredibly welcoming and so accommodating.
  • Disliked — No public transit nearby.

Check first with the Brown Street Inn, when staying in Iowa City!

Couldn't image a better B&B experience! Though a friend and I came to town for the great Iowa City Jazz Festival, our stay at the Brown Street Inn was the unexpected highlight of our weekend away. Innkeepers Mark and Bob provided a blend of hospitality, comfort, concierge and culinary talents sprinkled with high quality conversation which is unmatched in my personal travels. And that porch! Couple it with someone dear, a cool evening and a bottle of wine from John's Grocery (thanks SO much for that tip Mark!) and you just may experience a little slice of heaven like we did. You won't go wrong with a stay at the Brown Street Inn. Mark and Bob do the "B&B" experience right!

  • Liked — The warmth and high quality hospitality of the innkeepers.
  • Disliked — Leaving it behind.

The Brown Street Inn exceeded my expectations. Not only is the Inn clean, quiet, and beautifully decorated but also the atmosphere and aesthetic are enhanced by the graceful hospitality of Mark and Bob. Accessible but not at all intrusive, Mark and Bob are model innkeepers. Visiting friends in Iowa City, my four night stay at The Brown Street Inn provided the opportunity for reading and quiet as well as time to swap stories with Mark over breakfast and catch-up with friends on the large front porch. The green room is spacious and pleasantly appointed; the writing desk and reading chair are much appreciated ammenities. Breakfast is simple but more than adequate with fresh cut fruit, locally baked bagels and breads, cereal and granola, as well as daily pastries. Mark's fresh baked cookies in the evenings are a memorable treat. I look forward to returning to The Brown Street Inn and give it my highest recommendation!

We've just returned from our second happy stay with Mark and Bob. Our time at the Brown Street Inn is one of the things we especially look forward to on visits to family in Iowa City. They're perfect innkeepers -- warm, helpful, thoughtful, funny, knowledgeable, but not at all intrusive. And they attract interesting guests; in addition to great food, we've had some very interesting conversations around their table. And yes, the Inn is lovely, clean, attractively decorated, within walking distance to town, with inviting public spaces inside and out. We're looking forward to our next visit.
