“Exceptional hotel in downtown I.C.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2011

My husband and I stayed at the hotel Vetro in December and loved it. The hotel is modern and very chic. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was huge and lovely. The location is absolutely perfect. If you are planning to visit Iowa City, you could not be better located. This hotel is directly on the "ped mall", the area of Iowa City closed to car traffic and bustling with bars, restaurants and a fabulous library. Don't miss the market that is on the bottom floor of the hotel. Excellent beer selection and excellent deli choices. A spectacular hotel experience.

Thank you so much for staying at hotelVetro! Our unique hotel provides a great opportunity for a very modern comfortable experience. We also provide options for yoga, a healing center, a sushi restaurant and Share Wine Lounge and Small plates Bistro.

The next time you come back we look forward to you trying some of the indigenous craft beers offered in Share! Wishing you a great year!

The hotel is new, clean, modern and hip. Rooms have little kitchens but kitchens are not stocked with glassware, plates or even utensils. You must request thses items from front desk which is annoying considering I am paying $400/ night! Hotel doesn't have restaurant, just a trendy little sushi bar located in the small hotel bar.

Room Tip: Corner room is best.

I wanted to personally thank you for providing your comments on how we can improve our hotel. We have added standard kitchen amenities to the fourth floor of the hotel and provide an extensive offering of kitchen amenities to all of our guestrooms. During the time of your stay was a very busy University of Iowa Hawkeye weekend. We look forward to a future stay and you may notes price variations which might suit your travel differently.

We are very proud of the offerings we offer and glad to know you had a great stay!

Wishing you the best always-

This hotel would be awesome if it weren't so expensive.

The location is perfect if you are doing anything on or near campus. The view is nice. The service was good.

The room is fabulous if you are into modern Ikea-style design. I found it a little cold and uninviting, personally. However, the bed was comfortable, the shower was huge, and the heat worked really well, so all the important bases are covered.

My only issue with the hotel was the price. Over $300/night in Iowa City? I expected the best service I'd ever had. It was ok. True, there is a kitchenette, but there isn't a single dish, not even cups and spoons to go with the minuscule coffee offerings. You have to call for dishes, and if you don't specify they will only leave one of each. With no cleaning supplies provided, we ended up using (and ruining) bath towels in the kitchen because there aren't even paper towels to clean up with.

Also, I suspect you normally have to pay for parking. Both mornings we were there we left before there was an attendant on duty and got out for free, but when the cashier validated our parking, she made it sound like we would only get a discounted rate as a hotel guest.

I love the location enough I might stay there again. Or I might just stay at the Sheraton next door that's been there forever and a day. Not so stylish, but cheaper.

We recently stayed at HotelVetro in downtown Iowa City. We were in town to catch up with the place, see how it had changed and what was the same. I've stayed at numerous hotels, and B&B's in Iowa City in the past, and I was thrilled to find this fresh place with interesting architecture. HotelVetro has just the style I like with modern, clean decor, great service and an unbeatable location. We had a King Suite, which was spacious, plenty of places to lounge, a full size kitchenette, soaking tub, separate glass shower etc. They are set up for extended stays if you are in need of such accommodations. One gripe, there was no i-pod dock in the room, only a "cd" player, that lack is not so modern!

We are so pleased that you had a great stay! hotelVetro is a wonderful chic hotel in the heart of Iowa City and we are proud to provide such a fun hotel for everyone to enjoy! We are in the process of upgrading our electronics in the rooms and hope to have more accessible options for you within the next few months. Certainly the ipod docking is important and we are also considering options for ipads and other electronics to be more user friendly for everyone!

Come back anytime!

First the good. The rooms are attractive, modern and comfortable. The location in the center of downtown in walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the university is very good. WiFi Free. Separate bathtub and shower are a plus. Comfortable beds. The front desk staff's hearts are in the right place and they do try. The high end grocery store next door was a plus.
But there were some pause worthy glitches. We booked a corner premeire view suite. Our view was of a parking structure at eye level, and the top of the air conditioning machinery and no privacy unless the shades on the floor to ceiling windows were closed. We were able to switch to a better view room for the second night but not the first.
The room comes equipped with a kitchenette with no dishes, cutlery, pots, napkins, towels etc. Just empty cabinets. Why have a kitchen if it is not stocked with bare essentials? I heard someone ask housekeeping for paper towels which was a no go. We learned too late that one can request limited kitchen supplies from the front desk but this information was not made avaialble to guests.
We were given one bar of soap for a room with two sinks (bathroom and kitchen) and a tub and shower. The room the first night had shampoo, conditioner and shower gel affixed to the wall in the shower but not the tub, requiring one to get out of the tub to get to the soap. Since the room only had two glasses and two plastic cups, one couldn't use a cup to transfer soap. We called and received one additional bar of soap and two additional plastic cups which were not replaced during our four night stay unless we asked which go tiresome and we tipped the housekeeper five dollars on the first day! The room for the subsequent nights did have soap/shampoo dispensers in both tub and shower so this was just a glitch.
There were housekeeping problems, including seriously stained linens which the hotel was very responsive too, corrected immediately, and provided complimentary drinks, appetizers and breakfast which was very nice of them.
The hotel seems to occupy lower floors of the building and condo units occupy the bulk of the upper building. Possibly this dual function has a negative impact on hotel serivces. The front desk was typically staffed with one person.
One the last day my husband left $6 with the front desk to tip the waiter for breakfast. On reviewing the bill we see we were charged an additional $6 for this tip. We will call and the hotel will obviously correct this as well.
But still these glitches all kinda added up.
Maybe this review will help the hotel iron out some of these glitches that negatively impact an otherwise very nice hotel and staff.

Room Tip: Request a City View room, kitchen supplies, soap.

We are so pleased you enjoyed the physical ambiance of hotelVetro. We do recognize the limitations of some views yet hope they do not detract from all the wonderful offerings of the crisp inviting guestroom and bath decor.

I was certainly disappointed to hear that the housekeeping services provided were not up to our standards. We do provide various kitchenette options pending your needs. Please contact our Receptionist during your next visit! You also mentioned the lack of bath amenities by the tub and we are looking into other chic options to provide so you can enjoy the soaking experience! Thank you for bringing this to our attention!

We are currently testing a prearrival recognition option for you to prearrange some of your custom needs. We hope to have our signature services available by the first of September. When your travel brings you back to the Iowa City area we hope you will contact us to return. We value each guest and would love the opportunity to host you again!

Warmest of regards! Please contact me personally if I can be of assistance.

This hotel skimped on everything and uses spin words such "green" and "minimalist" in an attempt to distract you from the reality the place is old, tired, run down and shabby. Room service took 1 hour to deliver 2 bagels and a pot of coffee with a house less than half full. Carpet in room was worn and tattered, housekeeping did not vacuum, refreash glasses or clean surfaces even after we called as they never showed. Food was nothing to write home about you will be better going to a restaurant elsewhere. Parking is not at the hotel but rather in a public garage at the end of the block. The air conditioning sounded like a jet and made sleeping difficult to near impossible. Save your money and go to a bargin motel as you will receive the same level of service for far less expense.

My first overnight trip to UI for my daughter's orientation and chose hotelVetro based on the reviews here. What a disappointment . There is no hotel parking lot or a valet so you park in the public parking garage a short distance away and haul your bags to the hotel. Not what you would expect at $179. The room was very noise, you could hear the street traffic below all night. The thermostat did not work properly, and the frosted glass door to the bathroom means there is essentially no privacy between the people in the bedroom and the bathroom. When you turn on the bathroom light it floods the room for those people trying to sleep and every noise can be easily heard from outside the bathroom. Service at the front desk was average at best. This is my daughter's first year at UI but my last stay at this hotel.
