Iowa City has a number of good restaurants but very few top-of-the-line places. This is among the very best. It's fairly expensive for a college town, but worth the extra dollars. Have had dinner here several times, the service has always been good. It would be a little less than stellar in New York City, but for Iowa City, it's quite good. The bar puts out truly excellent cocktails and the wine list is fine, with good selection at a number of price points.
The menu is essentially a la carte. Main courses come with soup or salad, but vegetables and potatoes are extra. Everything is very well-prepared. The side dishes, in standard steakhouse fashion, are large enough for anywhere from 2-4 people to share. They do well with both the steak and the seafood sides of the menu.
A small quibble - on our most recent visit, it took a rather long time to clear and re-set a couple of adjacent tables. Granted, no one was seated at those tables the remainder of the evening, and that's probably why there was no rush to reset them, but an empty tabletop just is not appealing in a place where one expect to spend in excess of $60 per person. This won't keep me from going back again, however - there just isn't any other place in the downtown area in the same league as Joseph's.
