“Beautiful place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2012

We visited it right before a huge thunderstorm, so we spent quite a bit of time there, waiting for the lightning and torrential rain to end. It is very well maintained with lots of Iowa history. It now belongs to the University, who have taken good care of it.

“Nice photo op”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2012

Old Capitol is a photo opportunity with the gold dome and beautiful centerpiece of the pentacrest campus of University of Iowa. Inside there could be more interpretive displays but you get the sense of history for the first state capitol before Des Moines. It is used for UI faculty meetings and events and there is a small gift shop in the basement. Don't spend much time, then visit the quaint downtown shops.

“Small but interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2012

This was the location of the state capitol before it was moved to Des Moines, Iowa. It is set up as a museum with the rooms as they would have been. A few rooms include (somewhat unrelated) art exhibits. There is nice but basic interpretive material, which is interesting. The spiral staircase in the center is impressive. The museum is small, so probably plan about 30-60 minutes. Admission is free, so it's worth a stop. The location is convenient, right next to the natural history museum and downtown Iowa City. They don't have parking, but you will be able to find somewhere to park downtown (plan to walk a few blocks if you don't want to pay for parking).

“Better than I had expected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

I had been in the vicinity of the Old Capitol 100 times before. When I decided to go in one day, I was very favorably impressed. Much of it is as it was when it was used. The legislative chambers are great! If you are prone to liking beautifully restored old buildings, this one is worth going through!
