“Another Great Country Inn Experience!”
Reviewed August 31, 2013 via mobile

From the front desk staff to the breakfast server, we had a wonderful, albeit short, stay in Grinnell. The rooms were clean and well maintained...they even smelled fresh despite the 100° temperature outside. The location is close to Wal-Mart and Pizza Ranch. It is only a couple of miles to Grinnell College.

Rooms nicely appointed, comfortable, and clean. Insufficient hot water for bath/shower. Reservations easily made by phone and with response to request for discount with AARP or AAA. Not all advertised amenities were available (spa wasn't working). Second floor was not handicap accessible which was problematic given physical limitations and heavy baggage. There was no elevator. It would have been helpful for the front desk person to anticipate such needs. She was not particularly welcoming or service oriented. On the other hand, other staff was cordial, courteous and responsive. The breakfast and snacks were more than adequate.

Room Tip: If your baggage is heavy or you have physical limitations, ask for room on ground floor.

We stayed here this past week on a trip to KC. We are glad we picked this hotel, it was off the highway far enough, less than mile, you don't hear highway traffic. The hotel is also just a 3 minute drive to downtown Grinnell if you want to head their for anything. We walked up to the hotel and it has a nice sitting porch with chairs for about 8 people, we used it later in the evening to relax outside, a view of the road mostly, but it was quiet enough and an upgrade from a normal entrance. The lobby, pool and breakfast area were clean and quiet, no smells as someone recently mentioned, not sure what they talking about. The room was large enough, same with bathroom. Very clean, good bedding and mattresses, TV was flat screen with a lot of channels, nothing but good here. The breakfast was very good, better than most hotels, and all in all we would stay here again if every traveling through!

Room Tip: Get a room on east side of hotel, the road outside is not super close/noisy, but you might hear it...

My husband went in and booked the room. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was a bad smell in the hallway. We had a jacuzzi room, it was large but it smelled like mold something awful! The carpet was stained and the couch was stained. We pulled out the sofa bed and there was a water bottle in it. About 10:30 pm, the people upstairs came in and were jumping off the beds and onto the floor. It truly sounded like the ceiling was going to come down. We reported this to the front desk twice and it didn't stop. We were exhausted and too tired to try to find another hotel. The breakfast in the morning was average - the breakfast lady was nice. When we checked out the lady was wearing jeans and a hoodie with and had a ponytail in her hair (most hotels have a little better dress code to promote a professional image). I won't stay here again.

I would like to truly apologize for the experience you had at our facility. I truly do not have any ideas about any smell, this is the first we have heard of this. We truly do work very hard to make your stay as pleasant as possible. All of which will be explored quite intensely so that nothing like this should happen again. The whole staff and my self give a very heart felt apology .

We stopped overnight along the way on our trip west. The room was clean and the beds were really comfortable. Staff was friendly and very nice to our two young boys. The pool was really nice and our kids were able to burn off some energy after being cooped up in the car all day. Breakfast was good.

Veteran traveler that I am places like this are priceless.

After a long day of flying to Midway from Boston and driving through a horrific storm to get to Grinnell, over 4+ hours away I was in no mood for anything but a peaceful and quiet landing. I like to drive in the Midwest, but don't like anything complicated at the end of the road.

I got my wish thanks to a very friendly young woman at the front desk who got me checked in, cookied, and off to my room, which was just a few steps from the front. Because of a slight walking disability I asked for a room near the front and pool (I'm an avid daily swimmer), and that was provided via an online message in advance, after using email to request my need. Nice touch.

What one hopes for is quiet, a room in which everything works, good food when offered and nice exercise options. It was all here and I truly enjoyed my three night stay.

Quibbles? A tiny few. Per latest style the potty in the bathroom is a tiny little thing stuck in the middle of the room away from grab bars. The bedside light was not one from which one could read easily (I carry a little light for my Kindle).

Otherwise, the wi-fi worked beautifully. I'm not much of a breakfast eater, so what was laid out was fine. The pool is a nice sized one, perfect for laps. Good temp and very clean.

This was my second visit and I look forward to a third...just not driving through near tornadoes or eating at the nearby steakhouse (see my separate review of the Grinnell Steakhouse)!

This is the best hotel in Grinnell! The staff is wonderful. The hotel is clean. Breakfast is better than most. My only complaint would be the high rates during graduation, but it's hard to blame them for it.
