“Second visit was even better”

The Raj isn't really a hotel, although that's the TripAdvisor category. It's primarily an Ayurvedic Health Spa. I had 7 days of treatments here in both November 2011 and November 2012, and my experiences were even better the second time. Having a friend in Fairfield, I didn't stay here, but the general areas, dining, and treatment rooms were all very clean and comfy, often in the cream and light gold colors you see in Fairfield. It had a very spacious and light-filled atmosphere. The upstairs library is almost too cozy, and the whole place has intriguing abstract artworks.

As others have pointed out, it's not a pedicure and smoothie by the pool kind of spa. You have perhaps 3 hours of treatments each day, and a special diet designed to complement, or at least not interfere with, the goals of those treatments, which are selected for you by the Ayurvedic physicians based on interview, observation, and pulse diagnosis. The food is excellent, but not what you are accustomed to making for yourself at home (for some of us that's a good thing!)

I came back from my treatments feeling much more settled and gifted with a greater clarity. And I'm looking forward to another stay in November of 2013.

From the moment I arrived at The Raj I felt wrapped in a cocoon of love. Every member of the staff was delightful, helpful, kind, and happy. My room was extremely comfortable and delightful. The entire building was extremely clean, comfortable and i felt quite at home. The food was delicious and nourishing, and served in such a happy and personal way. The Panchakarma treatment was simply divine. I loved that there are organic/herbal tea & water stations all around the building. I can't wait until I have an opportunity to stay at the Raj again.

I recently returned from a 3 day (4 night) stay at The Raj. It was excellent. Perhaps the unfavorable reviews were due to misguided expectations- not knowing exactly what to expect. If you want a spa (and perhaps that is the wrong word to use) where you go with a friend for a facial and a massage, then this is definitely not the place for you! And it is a bit pricey so you must be sure this is the right place for you.

I went to The Raj 15 years ago (it had only been opened 4 years before) and then again a few years later and few years after that. But I knew it was a health and wellness "spa" - not just a relaxing few days away. It opened a whole new world for me- the world of Ayurvedic medicine as well as TM (Transcendental Medicine). It was enlightening, enriching and rewarding. And so I was looking forward to this return visit after many years.

I went again last week and was not disappointed. I went for the specific goal of improving my health. The whole atmosphere (if you let yourself get into it) was relaxing and soothing. The staff makes you feel very special and is well trained; everyone knows your name and tries to accomodate you and your needs. I found the food to be excellent. It is vegetarian, but geared for Panchakarma (the health regime). Besides the treatments, there is yoga offered twice a day, as well as cooking classes a few times a week as well as very interesting lectures each evening. They also offer classes in TM (Trancendental Meditation), which I took several years ago but, alas, " fell off the wagon" but was able to get a TM check and have started doing my meditation once again. You can also have a day (or days) of silence if you wish. I found the rooms, both the private and public, to be quite
comfortable and again, soothing and calming.

If you want to improve your health, in a very relaxed and calming atmosphere, to learn about Ayurvedic traditional medicine and TM, then this is definitely the place for you.

I am an alumni of Maharishi University of Management (MUM), Fairfield, Iowa, and periodically have ongoing education programs that I attend there... And when I go, I always stay at the Raj. It's an amazing Ayurveda (natural) Health Spa / Hotel in an uniquely pleasant area of rolling woods and farmland. The Raj is really a haven of peace. Here's why: the MUM college curriculum integrates the practice of Transcendental Meditation and Yoga into a traditional college level educational program, and with over 2000 people in the community (students, alumni, meditating together daily, the peacefulness just shimmers throughout the entire city. The Raj is situated in a secluded area that gives it the feel of a beautiful European countryside lodge, but with very upscale and well cared for rooms and meeting areas. One week there can be life empowering in very deep ways, mentally, physically, and spiritually. If you want to have an unusually peaceful and health-giving experience, try the Raj either as a simple hotel getaway, or indulge in its wonderful Ayurveda Health Spa programs. For recreation there are hiking and bike trails, and in the warm months, you can swim in the nearby Fairfield reservior, or in the winter in the town's olympic-sized indoor pool. Regardless, the Raj effect will stay with you for weeks afterwards.

I recently stayed at The Raj - a whim with a friend. I was more than pleasantly surprised. The location is gorgeous, the building designed with purpose and while the gold trim might "date it" as other reviews suggest, the quality of material, carpet, etc. surpasses most 4 to 5 star hotels I've stayed at. But of course this is only relevant if you miss the whole point of going to The Raj. It is a place where if you want to respected, provided opportunities to relax, learn and reflect this is it. Your treatments and meals are well organized, leaving plenty of time for you to take part in offered lessons (cooking, yoga, talks) or rest. The treatments are outstanding and do work. I haven't been able to sleep on my back for nearly a year and after their treatments and continued oil baths I am now sleeping better and "on my back". The cleansing also helped me feel like I once was, healthy and happy. I will be returning for a longer stay and in the mean time many of family and friends are going.

In short, The Raj is a place for people that want to learn a new way of being, and for those already aware of Ayurveda it's a place to strengthen their roots. For others who aren't aware or aren't open then The Raj might not be for them.

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely and quiet. If you like morning sun then east side, if enjoy an afternoon pond...

I have stayed at THE RAJ myself and found it to be a very nice place to relax. As for the guests I've had the pleasure of bringing to THE RAJ, they also found it to be a wonderful place to restore their well being. The treatments seem to work for them very well. The grounds they found to be peaceful and at one with nature. In a word, they get back in the limo as new people! Note from your chauffeur: If you are traveling to THE RAJ during the winter months, be prepared for delays in departing the Fairfield / Vedic City area. The weather may be fine at THE RAJ, and there may be WHITEOUT conditions at your choice of airports. This has happened to me with guests, and I could not pick them up because travel was not recommended on roads. The same with arrivals. So come for a visit and enjoy what THE RAJ has to offer, it will be well worth the trip!
