Owner description: The Danish Windmill is a museum for all people interested in Denmark, Danish customs, Scandinavian traditions and, of course, windmills. Elk Horn’s Danish windmill is America’s only authentic working Danish windmill. The mill, originally built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848 was brought to the United States in November, 1975 and rebuilt in Elk Horn, Iowa by community volunteers in 1976, America’s Bicentennial year.

My grandparents live in this lovely small town so I grew up going here. I still love to tour the windmill and see how it works. There is a Danish restaurant that serves danish food (also has american entrees). There is a town call Kimballton that has a replica of the Little Mermaid on the main street. (Kimballton is about 3 miles north of Elk Horn). The residents of Elk Horn are very friendly and will help you with any questions. They do have a Tivoli Fest each Memorial weekend. Lots of neat things to see and do that weekend.

It's just a windmill. Elk Horn doesn't have a lot, but it's a friendly town with some shops and a decent hotel. They have a few good restaurants, too. The windmill is just that. You go and look at it, learn a little bit about the history of the area and the windmill itself. It's a nice diversion on your trip.

Stopped by on my way to Omaha. For $2.00 they will show you a video of why the town of Elk Horn decided to build a windmill. After the video, you got to go inside the windmill and go up to approximately the fourth level or so. It is an exact replica of a windmill in Denmark, so it was rather interesting to see.

For $2.00 each we got to see a video and tour the windmill. It was actually very interesting to see. I would recommend this. The grounds around windmill are also very beautiful. There is also a gift shop.
