Eco Venao has lodging for every kind of traveler. Right next to the restaurant, there's a building with a nice and spacious dorm room and a few small private rooms, all with a shared bath. A minute down a path are two rustic, open air cabanas with a shared bathrooms. Then there are the beautiful houses- Mango House, La Casona, and the Casitas. The Mango house can be rented partially or fully; La Casona and the two Casitas are all close to each other and can also be rented for a group. Casita #1 has a double bed and a slightly better view so I'd go for that one if you're a couple. (Casita #2 has twin beds.)
We chose to stay in one of the Casitas and absolutely loved it. We were high up on the hill and had a spectacular view of the ocean from our room. The room itself was also fantastic- very nice and well-decorated. There was one hammock out front where you could also enjoy the view. The two casitas are built as one structure and share a wall but we didn't have any noise problems from our neighbors. We paid $40/night and I honestly couldn't believe that we got such a nice place at that price. It was a great deal.
Be aware that it's a bit of a walk uphill to the Casona and the Casitas. You can drive up this dirt road but we had a rental car and weren't able to get the car up it. The manager was nice enough to drive us up with our bags when we arrived and our neighbors brought our bags down for us when we checked out. It's about a 5-8 minute walk uphill from the restaurant, depending on whether you take the trail (via the Mango House) or come straight up the road. The restaurant is another 5-7 minutes from the beach so it's about a 15 minute walk from La Casita and La Casona to the beach. The view is well worth it though! Also make sure to bring a flashlight to get back up at night! There is no lighting on the path or road at all. We got caught out one day without our flashlights and there were no extras to borrow. Luckily, the manager was there and she gave us a ride up. The bugs were also not too bad when we were there and I got away with just putting some bug spray around my ankles at night. You can also see howler monkeys on the grounds- very cool!
Although the Casitas are not rustic at all and are quite nice, we had problems with both the a/c and the hot water. The a/c only barely worked and got the room just a few degrees cooler than outside. We were fine with this but don't expect the room to be very cool. We also had no hot water for a few days and had to ask multiple times to have it fixed. When it was finally fixed, the choice was basically scalding hot water or cold water; so we had to just take cold showers anyway. This was not a big deal for us but something to be aware of if you find hot water a necessity.
We were there for 5 nights and the housekeeping was also nonexistent. They are supposed to change the towels and linens on the 3rd day, and we desperately needed new towels at that points as our old ones stank from all of the dampness in the air! On the morning of the 3rd day, I even made sure to request that we get a change of towels. We came back that night and someone had clearly been in our room as all of our towels were gone but none were given to us as replacements! This made for an extremely unhappy evening as we'd gotten stuck in Pedasi that day after diving and didn't make it back to the room until 10 pm, in desperate need of showers. Reception was closed and we were too exhausted at that point to try to find someone to give us towels so it made for a very unpleasant evening. They also didn't empty the trash or change the linens. It was really the opposite of housekeeping- all they did was come in and take away all of the towels! You can also supposedly get beach towels from reception but every day, no matter what time we stopped by reception, they never had any beach towels.
That was really our only issue though and otherwise, we truly loved staying in La Casita. Eco Venao was really a lovely place to stay and it was great that they had such a wide array of accommodations. The restaurant was also very nice. The breakfasts were good and cheap. Dinner was about $10 for a main dish and they had fun cocktails for around $6. The lunch and dinner menus were different from each other, and both changed each day. That was really nice as you end up eating there alot of the time and the variety was appreciated. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Overally, it was a fantastic place and an amazing value. I highly recommend it!
