“Pleasantly surprised”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2009

My son and I drove to Iowa for just some sightseeing. I saw the older hotel downtown but didn't know it was so nice. After speaking to a local, they recommended it. It had just reopened, some of the things weren't open yet, but we got a fantastic rate through Expedia. I was so impressed with our room, expensive looking hardware in the bathroom, our bedding had beautiful linens and tons of pillows. We had a nice stay there, it was elegant. Across the street there is a coffee house and there are many restaurants nearby also. It was the weekend and I walked to the Farmer's Market a few blocks up, that was such a treat also. In the morning there was a bowl of fresh fruit and muffins.

My husband and I had a wonderful weekend get away in Dubuque--and a large part of that "wonderful" was because we stayed at the Julien Inn.

My first impulse after check in (very pleasant, efficient front desk staff) was to explore the incredibly inviting, guest-friendly lobby. The centerpiece of the lobby is this sweeping staircase which leads to an open air second level. But situated around the lobby are these intimate, seating areas with comfortable furniture designed in cushy, opulent period fabrics just inviting you to sit down by the window and relax--lots of interesting photos from the 1800's & turn of the century to view as well as other collectible treasures to discover. The environment on the second floor is just as comfortable and interesting.

Our room was tastefully appointed featuring a very comfortable King-sized bed dressed in appealing bedding, honor bar, large HD tv, etc. The bathroom was spacious, lots of towels!, large shower (good water pressure) soft lighting and french doors--nice! I made sure to put on the cozy white robe made available too. The air conditioning worked great, keeping the temperature in the room ideal for us. All in all, we were very pleased and impressed.

We live outside of Madison and wanted a weekend adventure, but didn't want to drive
forever to get to it so, we took advantage of the introductory promotion offered by the Julien Inn. We traveled to Dubuque on picturesque Hwy. 11. The rolling hills, pastures of grazing cattle and quaint little towns we passed through really helped us relax and wind down. Even tho we took a little extra time to stop and shop, our drive there was a little over 2 hrs., so we could enjoy the time in the car without getting restless. There is so much to see just in walking distance of the hotel--we did a walking tour of the historical section of town and checked out the incredible architecure. We tried three different restaurants in the area (all great) and went to the Mississippi Museum and Aquarium and of course, strolled on the river walk. We're planning another trip in the fall!

My husband and I booked the Hotel Julien's introductory rate room for a one night stay in mid-July. We are familiar with Dubuque and we have watched as the renovation of this downtown hotel has progressed We were eager to stay there. The renovation is not complete. Upon arrival the main entrance was blocked by sawhorses and we were directed to the parking lot entrance and had to take our luggage up the elevator to reception and then another to our room. The ice machines were not functioning, the restaurant on site was not open and although the coffee in the lobby was available, it was a day old. Our room coffeemaker was broken and a hunt through the downtown area adjacent to the hotel for coffee on a Monday morning was futile. The room was lovely, the bed and bedding comfortable and new and the bathroom was quite nice. The restaurant renovation began at 7:30 AM and we woke to the sound of drilling and nail guns. This hotel has real possibilities but as of now is understaffed and lacking in 4 star amenities that it categorizes itself to be. If management can get their act together this hotel has the possibility of being a true 4 star.

Thank you for seeing the potential in our hotel! We continue to strive towards excellence, and comments like yours truly help us to achieve that goal. Our restaurant as well as our lounge have recently opened and audible construction noise has ceased. The saw horses have moved from the front entrance and ice machines are now functional. As each part of the hotel has opened, we've continued our mission to add friendly, shining personalities to our team and have nearly doubled our staff since July. We welcome the opportunity to host you again during your next visit to our area!

I am handicapped so we needed a walk-in shower in our suite. Bathroom was very handicapped accessible and large, which was very nice. Clean, comfortable, large suite, big screen TV, snacks and wine available (for $$). Extremely quiet, no disturbances. High quality linens and towels, plenty of hot water at high pressure. Very pleasant stay with no problems, friendly staff. Dubuque, Iowa, has the BEST TASTING WATER in the world (my opinion).

I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. I completely agree that Dubuque has great water! Since your visit, both our restuarant and bar have opened. We also anticipate our new indoor pool will be opening in the coming weeks. Come back and see us again!

In a word: wow!

The Hotel Julien is currently undergoing a $30 million renovation from top to bottom, and they have spared no expense. The rooms are exquisite, very tastefully decorated and completely redone. The new beds are plush and stocked full of pillows. There's even a white rob hanging in the closet for you to lounge in after taking your shower, stocked with Aveda products. Sip on a glass of wine or a cocktail from the mini-bar while you surf the Internet on the free WiFi in your room or while watching the HD TV.

As of late July the Riverboat Lounge looked like it was still about a month away from being complete. The restaurant was still a shell. We didn't see the pool and fitness area, but were told they would be ready in a couple of months. If these areas are anything like the rest of the hotel, they will be impressive. We also peeked in and saw the ballrooms, which are very elegant.

Older reviews of this hotel were obviously written before the massive remodeling. I stayed in the Julien back in my college days, but this is a different hotel now. The new owners have updated the look and feel of the entire hotel (inside and out) while preserving just a bit of the history.

I've stayed in some boutique hotels in Chicago, San Francisco, Houston and Las Vegas. The Hotel Julien is actually better than similar hotels found in much larger cities. This is now the only place we will stay when returning to Dubuque to visit family and friends.

Since you've been gone, our restaurant, Caroline's, has been completed. The Riverboat Lounge is also open for business and soon you'll be able to take a dip in our new indoor pool. Thank you for your comments - we can't wait to see you next time you're in town!

My daughter and I were so impressed by everything the Julien had to offer us, during our stay last week end. From the wonderful staff, to the lovely lobby, to the fabulous room with its plush robes and Aveda hair/body products, to the nice light breakfast that was provided....this place oozes total class. Our 2 1/2 hr drive was totally worth it . We can't wait to go back when the pool and spa are back open!

This the first time we stayed at Hotel Julian. It was wonderful. The hotel was beautiful and very tastefully done. Our room was on the 4th floor. Very clean and came with all the nice personal touches. Great beds and linens.
The hotel was very peaceful and quiet. The staff was very courteous and friendly. Could not have been nicer. Their renovation was a very worthwhile investment. We were glad that we hadn't read any of the reviews before the renovation.
