“Beautiful but flawed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2013 via mobile

Hotel facilities and remodel are amazing but the staff is a bit aloof (friendly but aloof). Staff seems young and new? TV channels available were not HD and there is no pay per view. Had to find a RedBox and use my laptop. In fact, when I called the front desk the young woman that answered had to ask someone else if they had pay per view? They also didn't have an HDMI cord that I could've borrowed to at least watch a movie on the flat screen. Wi-Fi was in and out and wasn't fast enough to stream movies on Netflix or Hulu. Walls are a bit thin so you can hear people talking and toilet lids slam. If your room faces the river prepare for the train all night (loud even on the 8th floor)! Pluses - Carolines restaurant was great, room was clean, and Dubuque is great!

Dear Dan Sayer76,

Thank you for the comments shared about your recent visit to Dubuque and Hotel Julien. Our apology for the challenges with the wi-fi service; rest assured this has been looked into to the point that we have a different arrangement with our provider scheduled for implementation in a few short weeks.

Glad that you enjoyed dining in Caroline's and the City of Dubuque.

From the time I called to plan dinner meeting event until the actual event everything was great. They were very accomadating and professional. Great communication. We had our dinner and small meeting last night and it was wonderful. Buffet which I was allowed to choose from a variety of items to be served. All the guests said it was a gourmet buffet. The servers were most pleasant and efficient. It was so comfortable people did not want to leave.

job well done. Thank you!!

The remodeled room was terrific. Queen size bed was comfy. Room configuration with bathroom was quaint. Bathroom was very large and all newly remodeled. We did not eat in the dining room. The ambiance of the lobby was very lovely. Location was noisy. We heard the train through out the night, and some Semi-truck noise on the nearby roads. Check In parking was nonexistent at the lobby level, on the street side. Parking was a little difficult, since it's either across the street, or multi level in the back, both being completely outdoors, thankfully it wasn't snowing or raining and had to drag our luggage through it all. There is a covered drop off area near the restaurant, but there are no valets, or bellman, and the luggage carts are not on this level.

We had a queen suite and it was beautiful! The bathroom was huge. We could use the comfiest bathrobes. The staff was great. It was quiet. The hotel is old and steeped in history but rooms are very nice and modern (while still keeping some of the history). Parking was a breeze! The restaurant had great food that was very reasonably priced with accommodating hours. There's not much to do or see in the area on a Sunday though (our first time in Dubuque for a girls-only weekend) but we were glad we visited regardless as the hotel was great!!!! I wish we would have had more time there!

As said in the title, this is a nice hotel both with old elegance and modern convenience. We stayed in a King's room, the room is not so big, but the bathroom is, which is a real plus. All amenities are of fine quality. Bed and linens are super comfy. I only wish that the staff, especially the front desk guys, could have given more welcoming feel to go well with the nice hotel.

Dear Wei H,

Glad to read of your enjoyment of Hotel Julien on your recent visit.

Appreciate your recognizing the large bathroomof the guest rooms. The recent renovation allowed for the expanding of guest room space by reducing the number of guest rooms overall.

Looking forward to your next visit.

Sincerely,

Anniversary get-a-way and we spent 3 days and 2 nights in the Capone Suite. Quiet relaxing weekend in a historical huge suite. Ate all our meals in which made the stay even more romantic.

They recently spent over thirty million dollars in renovation and the woodworking is outstanding. The staircase in the lobby area going up to the second floor is amazing. You just want to talk on it.

Room Tip: They have lots of rooms with Jacuzzi tubs for two. Overlooks the Mississippi.

This was a wonderful, tastefully decorated hotel in a great location for tourist activities in Dubuque. It's right on the Mississippi River, so you can watch all the river traffic if your room faces that direction, and it's right over a bridge from the National Museum of the Mississippi River. The lobby of the hotel oozed 19th century elegance, as did the corner Premier Suite we had. I can't remember being in any other such spacious suite, and I've stayed in many hotels. Although the hotel is old, it feels very clean and updated. We ate dinner in the hotel restaurant, and the waitstaff were very friendly and the food was good. This hotel is a bit of a splurge but it's worth it. A couple of very minor negatives: the pillows on the bed were extremely hard, and the TV in the bedroom was parallel to the bed, instead of across from the foot of the bed, because of the shape of the room.

Room Tip: Get a room that faces the River.

Dear JMAChicago,

Thank you for sharing your experience at Hotel Julien Dubuque.

Glad to read of your pleaure of the river views that are offered from the hotel. If in the area again, please take time to ride the Fenelon Elevator up the bluff for a spectacular view of the river and the west borders of Wisconsin and Illinois.

Our housekeeping department will enjoy reading of your recognizing the cleanliness of the hotel. They work hard at it every day.

Hope to see you again soon.
