The Hancock House has a balcony overlooking the city and river and is a great place to relax and converse with fellow guests or all by yourself. I recommend a day trip to Galena. The rooms are decorated and furnished in an old style that takes you back in time. You will marvel at how this house was built in its time. The house needs some more TLC but I can appreciate it is never ending task for the owners. The breakfast is always very good and the cookies left for nights are great. If you are looking for something different than a Super 8 and costs just a few $ more then give it a try.

Every time we're in the beautiful city of Dubuque, we make sure that at least part of our trip includes staying with Chuck and Susan. The house itself is a breathtaking trip to an elegant and simpler time. Combined with the hospitality, kindness, and humor of the owners, this place is not to be missed. The owners go above and beyond to make our stay welcoming and comfortable. Every room we've stayed in has had an amazing view of the city, been immaculately clean, and immediately made us feel like we were home while on vacation. Breakfast was tremendous and we enjoy conversing with other travelers while preparing for our day. If you are going to Dubuque, make sure the Hancock House is on your itinerary, you will soon know what being part of the family feels like.

I have just recently had the good fortune to stay at The Hancock House. Sue and Chuck are very gracious hosts who encourage guests to treat their guest house as a home away from home. Each room is a treat for the eyes and the attention to detail is amazing. The enormous dining room table provides an area for lively discussion as guests eat Sue's delicious breakfasts! The view from the bluff upon which The Hancock House is situated is stunning. I would highly recommend The Hancock House to anyone visiting Iowa.

Just returned and planning to go back. Owners Chuck and Susan treat you like family! We felt immediately at home. Our room (Mrs Hancock ) was huge with a wonderful view and several windows to create a pleasant cross breeze. Even though air conditioning was available was great to sleep with the windows open and wake up each morning to bird songs, followed by leisurely scrumptious breakfast. Can't get that in a commercial hotel where one is shoe holed in small cubicle rooms! I can see why so many come back and enjoy just staying at the house. We took in the sites but really enjoyed hanging out on the porch. We never felt rushed - at check in, breakfasts, or leaving. Very reasonably priced and WELL worth every penny.

Room Tip: Call and talk to Susan or Chuck- the web site show the different rooms but don't worry all are j...

Chuck and Susan Huntley have been innkeepers at the Hancock House for a long time and their experience, knowledge, and pride in this property shows itself in many ways. From their welcoming tour of the main floor common rooms, to their ability to quickly read their guests and anticipate their needs, you will find them to be gracious hosts at this magnificent B&B. The guest rooms are immaculate and well planned so that decorative touches don't overburden the guest(s) and yes, you will find space in which to place your personal belongings.

Breakfast both mornings was wonderful, but be sure to make any food allergies known at check-in. The self-serve fridge with soft-drinks, teas, coffee, boxed wine, and a few beers is a feature seldom found in the B&B's that I've stayed in over the years. Such a luxury to be able to go down to the kitchen for a couple of cookies, or to have a place to store restaurant leftovers. Also, area brochures are readily pigeonholed in an alcove and there's even a small gift shop which operates on the honor system. My only complaint would be that wifi-access was iffy in our guest room, but worked well in the common areas of the house as well as on the porch.

Having stayed here previously, I did note a few changes that indicated that our hosts are aging a bit, but then again, so am I. The flower gardens weren't as carefully tended and the fine wraparound porch was in the midst of being detailed, but as I have weeds in my gardens and haven't gotten around to restraining my deck this summer, who am I to judge? Perhaps these are the very touches that make this B&B feel so much like home...

Room Tip: Great views of downtown Dubuque and the Mississippi River on the east side of the house.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at The Hancock House. The home is well taken care of and very clean. There is not a room in this home that we wouldn't recommend as all of them have their own unique charm. The view of the Mississippi river is beautiful! The downtown area is within walking distance. Breakfast the each morning was delicious! The hospitality shown by the owners was outstanding! They were very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. We enjoyed their company immensely! We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing time away!

Hancock House is an old Victorian perched on the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. Certainly a good setting for a B and B, but ultimately any overnight experience comes down to the graciousness and spirit of the hosts.. Fortunately, Chuck and Susan have the welcoming genes in spades! I was traveling on my own so I wasn’t too attuned to the finer touches of décor or comfort – my spirit was tired so I needed happy energy to revive it, and Chuck and Susan were equal to the task. Friendly, helpful but not intrusive, they greeted me, helped get me set up, oriented me relative to the town (and dinner) and then made the place seem like it was mine. Breakfast the next morning was delicious, but even better was the friendly conversation that took hold around the table, buoyed up by the inn-keepers but never dominated by them. We all left feeling like buddies – the mark of a skilled host!
