PROs: good for young families, affordable, nice location

CONs: Lacking “resort” amenities, showing some signs of age

KNOW: Coffee lovers should come prepared with favorite K-cups; Room has Keurig, mini fridge and microwave; bring your own hair dryer

REVIEW:
My husband and I brought our 3 year old here for a mini getaway in October 2017. We had a good time.

The hotel is located on the river walk and within easy walking distance to the National Mississippi Museum. The grounds are nice and there's free parking. We stayed on the sixth floor, and we did not notice any chlorine smell. Aside from the waterpark area, arcade and restaurant, It is noticeably lacking the common amenities we normally find at "resorts." There's no coffee shops/stands, no spa and no small general store for forgotten travel items. It's really just a hotel with a big pool area. The restaurant (Tony Roma's) is reasonably affordable for a hotel setting. The restaurant also has a decent breakfast buffet. See my separate restaurant review for more details.

The waterpark is small and primarily targets elementary-aged kids and younger. Teens may have fun, but probably wouldn't be entertained for long. The focal point of the park is the giant (4 story) water jungle gym. There are two large water slides attached to it, and they end in a very shallow landing area. Non-swimmers will be fine using these. (Our 3 year old loved it and was able to navigate it without assistance.) Aside from that, there is a kiddie pool with a toddler sized slide, a very small lazy river (30'x30' ish), and one big waterslide that empties into the pool area. I saw young kids with water wings, so I guess they are allowed.

We were there from a Thursday through Saturday in October. We were at the water park on Thursday evening, Friday morning (9-11ish) and Friday evening (6-730ish). The busiest time was actually Thursday night. There was barely anyone there Friday morning.

The waterpark and guest rooms are showing signs of age. The water slides are fading in color and there are rust spots throughout the pool area. (Kids won’t notice or care.) You may see chipped/scratched furniture and peeling wallpaper in your guest room. However, the waterpark is enjoyable and the rooms are comfortable despite these things. The rooms are well appointed with a mini-fridge, microwave and keurig. Unless I missed it, I did not see a room service menu or a way to order movies. Bring your own hair dryer - the one in the room is mediocre at best.

Bottom Line: We would consider coming here again until our kids outgrow it.

We always love coming back to the Grand Harbor in Dubuque. We always request a River View on the 7th Floor. Join the Diamond Jo Casino and receive great vacation packages. Tony Roma's Restaurant is connected to the Hotel. Don't forget to say"Hi" to Marvin, the greeter at the hotel. He is a wonderful source of Dubuque History!

Room tip: The 7th floor is best!

Went for an overnight trip with 3 kids, ages 6 ( twins) and 8, and 4 adults. Rooms were very nice. Water park was a big hit with the kids! They got to play even before the room was guaranteed and then again the next day even tho we had to check out of the room at 11am. All included with our 1 night room rate. We will be going back again soon!

My self & 3 boys stayed two nights got the river museum package for the first night and the second night was a package that came with $20 in arcade tokens breakfast voucher standard room with waterpark access both where a great value. and we had a good time. The waterpark is great for kids 10 & under

Room tip: We had a standard room not fancy but adequate. The book in the room with area restaurants & things to do needs updated & the soda machine on our floor needed to be restocked. The room phone & tv remote didn't work but maintenance took care of both very quickly.
