“Disappointed”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2012

We were expecting to stay at a nice place. The cost is too expensive for the quality of the room. There were holes in the sheets, rooms not very clean. There were signs posted saying they were under renovation, but we seen no renovations going on. The outside is very nice, however as soon as you step into your room, not so nice. We have stayed at resorts where the cost is much cheaper and the resort is much cleaner, actually emaculate.

The property is getting quite worn out, although it looked like they were beginning repairs. The room was average/below average and the bathroom smelled like urine. Our entire floor smelled like cigarettes. Overall a good place to take kids when it's cold outside because of the water-park, but I liken it to a large Chuckee Cheese, overrun with kids, but what do you expect. Overpriced for the quality, it was dirty and somewhat run-down. For half the price you can stay at the Best Western in Dubuque which has a large indoor pool and is clean and remodeled. Grand Harbor is however located in a very nice area of town with lots to do. No breakfast offered.

Room Tip: Ask for a non-smoking FLOOR as we had a non-smoking room but the hallway smelled like a bowling alle...

We stayed at this hotel for a wedding weekend, We have a 4 month old and a 2 year old. The room had a very nice view of the river, the barges and boats entertained our 2 year old. There is a lovely river walk right outside the hotel which is easily accessible with a stroller. The hotel itself was affordable at $99 a night group rate, that INCLUDED the water passes which were good for the day we stayed until 3pm the next day. We were there a Friday/Saturday and the waterpark was busy but not crowded,

The waterpark had enough going on to entertain the 2 year old for a good 2 hours, basketball hopps in the pool, the lazy river, the water slides and baby pool were his favorites. There were tables set away from the water for Grandma to hold and play with the 4 month old. The arcade looked like fun and had a variety of ticket games, but we didn't get a chance to play.

The aquarium is located walking distance, just next door to the hotel, we would have gone if we were staying another day. There is a beer brewery with a restaurant at the end of the river walk--two parking lots over from the hotel. The food was awesome- the food at the restaurant's hotel was decent and prices accordingly.
All staff were helpful and polite. We would definitely stay there again if we were going to Dubuque again.

Room Tip: 639 is and end room, away from elevators and great view of bridges

We stayed here on a weekend getaway. We were given the choice of an upgraded room facing the city or older room facing the river - we selected the upgraded room and looks like glad we did. I do a lot of travel for business so have high expectations. The greeter on the bottom level was helpful although I would relable his station to "conceirge". When I asked him what he did he said just help direct - I said so like a conceirge - he said well kind of! Why not - this would be a bonus to the hotel. Front desk staff were awesome, made recommendations when we asked, and went out of their way to help. Ate at Tony Romas just because it was 9:30 at night - I would not recommend it. Wait staff was outstanding, food below expectations. Breakfast was the same way. Although we didnt use the water park we did look at it. Looks like a great place for young kids - I would bring the grandkids here next time! Nice riverwalk. Room was reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Select the newer remodeled rooms facing the city. Who cares about facing the river - you can walk a...

We have talked about staying at this hotel for ages and last weekend we spent Friday night there instead of our usual Dubuque hotel....mainly because we got a better last minute rate. We arrived at 3PM and our room was ready - yeah. Gabby at the front desk was delightful. We were feeling very good about our choice. After parking our car and getting our bags we headed into lobby only to discover that it was "rush hour"! Sadly there are only 2 elevators for this hotel and that is a problem we had to deal with for most of our visit. The room was average, the sheets had some holes and the decor was tired. We did enjoy happy hour at Tony Roma's and also our dinner. We decided that we will continue to stay at our usual Dubuque hotel next time....

Our families were part of a wedding at the elaborate Grand River Center. We were busy with festivities all day long and were unable to check-in any earlier than the terribly inconvenient late time of 4:00. When I called three weeks prior, I was told to call before nine o clock and they would ensure our room was ready that day. Fabrication of the truths.... when we called the day of check in, we were greeted with an incredibly snotty woman who was inexplicably rude and uneducated about your hotel policies. Completely understandable since the housekeeping is unaware of appropriate cleaning standards. There will pills in the dresser drawers, sticky goop in the bottom of trash can, nasty floors and the pillows and bedding were less than appropriate for the terribly high price that was paid for this hotel. Should have stayed at our regular hotel, the Julien, which is cheaper and exhibits much higher quality. When we saw the Grand River Center and its appealing beautiful qualities, we were appalled at the run down, small, disgusting hotel that you associate with it. The hundreds of people attending this wedding, will never return to this atrociously expensive hotel that it's qualities match none of. You should be ashamed of your staff and your hotel.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for you recent comments regarding your stay at the Grand Harbor. Due to the sold out occupancy our hotel faces every weekend it is almost impossible to guarantee early check -in to every guest especially for weddings. You were instructed to call at 9:00 becuase sometimes we are able to get a room for guests that are attending weddings but never guaranteed. I sincerely appologize however for the condition of your room and I we will address those concerns immediately.

We went on a family trip this summer and spent two nights and three days. My children, ages 2 and 3, had so much fun at the waterpark! We split it up and went for an hour or two, two days rather than spending one entire day there. They had a zero entry pool that was great for my little ones, and my husband really enjoyed all the slides. The lifeguards were great about letting my husband take the kids down the slides with him!
We can't wait to go back in a few years when our kids are a bit older - they'll have even more fun when they can explore everything for themselves.
The hotel was nice and clean, and the staff was courteous (not overly friendly at all, but courteous is okay with us). We had great views of the Missisippi River and really we barely left the hotel at all! There is plenty to do within walking distance, including the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Tony Roma's restaurant, and the riverfront walk.
The downsides would be only that there are only two elevators for a pretty large hotel, so waiting for one (we were on the top floor) took a bit of time on Sunday night/Monday morning. Another was that breakfast was not included. We knew ahead of time, though, and just took our own so we wouldn't have to pay for breakfast at the restaurant.
If you can go during the week, I would highly recommend that - the price is sky-high on weekends and it's a lot more busy. We were there Sunday night and Monday night, and paid a very fair price, plus there were not many people to crowd the waterpark on Monday and Tuesday. (Check for openings before reserving a room though; the waterpark is not open during the week in the wintertime!)

Room Tip: Ask for a room on one of the two top floors, with a view of the river - it's spectacular!
