“Definitely Going Back”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

We went on a family trip this summer and spent two nights and three days. My children, ages 2 and 3, had so much fun at the waterpark! We split it up and went for an hour or two, two days rather than spending one entire day there. They had a zero entry pool that was great for my little ones, and my husband really enjoyed all the slides. The lifeguards were great about letting my husband take the kids down the slides with him!
We can't wait to go back in a few years when our kids are a bit older - they'll have even more fun when they can explore everything for themselves.
The hotel was nice and clean, and the staff was courteous (not overly friendly at all, but courteous is okay with us). We had great views of the Missisippi River and really we barely left the hotel at all! There is plenty to do within walking distance, including the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, Tony Roma's restaurant, and the riverfront walk.
The downsides would be only that there are only two elevators for a pretty large hotel, so waiting for one (we were on the top floor) took a bit of time on Sunday night/Monday morning. Another was that breakfast was not included. We knew ahead of time, though, and just took our own so we wouldn't have to pay for breakfast at the restaurant.
If you can go during the week, I would highly recommend that - the price is sky-high on weekends and it's a lot more busy. We were there Sunday night and Monday night, and paid a very fair price, plus there were not many people to crowd the waterpark on Monday and Tuesday. (Check for openings before reserving a room though; the waterpark is not open during the week in the wintertime!)

Room Tip: Ask for a room on one of the two top floors, with a view of the river - it's spectacular!

This was our second visit to the Grand Harbor Resort and Water Park. The location is superb. It’s right on the Mississippi River. Across the street is a casino, it’s right next to the amazing Mississippi River Aquarium, on the nearby are excellent restaurants and wine-bars, and the river walk is right there. There are plenty of activities to see and do.

There are a few oddities about the hotel. The second floor is where you enter from the levy side of the river. This is where the front desk is located. So if you park in front of the building you will have to ascend a floor to reach reception. While the elevators are in the middle of the building, the only stairwells are at either side. While we were there one of the elevators was under construction so the only other elevator was constantly busy. The restaurant and bar is on the 2nd floor. The Water Park and arcade are on the first.

The rooms were big and clean but starting to look a little bit worn. However, they were in the midst of a large construction project so they may be going to spruce them up a bit. The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows. The toilet is in a separate area from the sink, this can be good if you have multiple people in the room. Wifi was good. They serve breakfast in the restaurant on the second floor. Reasonable prices, tasty food, decent service.

This is a very family oriented hotel. If you have young kids, they will love the water park. (It’s not included in the room-rate.) Although I feel the facilities themselves are fairly average, this is an ideal location for staying in Dubuque.

Room Tip: Get a river view and high as possible.

My extended family of 14 stayed here July 27-29th, 2012 and let me just say that this hotel is disgusting dirty and the rooms have an odor of must and body odor. It wasnt just one room, but all of our rooms. The bathrooms were dingy, dirty, the grout had mold, the wallpaper was yellowing and peeling off and the shower curtain was moldy! YUCK!
Let me tell you about the patio off of our suite, it was not a patio at all (but just a sliding glass door that was broken) you could not stand or sit on the patio. None of the rooms have queen beds, just double beds that have holes in the sheets. The bedding was cheap and looked tacky.
As much as we paid for these rooms each night, I really expected more. It is really a shame that it is called a "resort", it didnt have any ammenties or comforts that resorts have.

Stayed here for a group function. Our two rooms had great views of the river. Rooms are large with frig and mirco and in-room coffee. Beds were 2 queens that seemed small but were comfortable. Air worked great. Check in was on second floor but Bellman directed us were to go. It was very quick and painless!! Had our meetings in the river room next door and that was very nice. Desk staff was helpful and friendly. My only negative that I saw was the wait for an elevator. With all the familes comiing in for the weekend for the waterpark they had lots of kids with lots of stuff. Yes they are remodeling but I didn't see or hear to much. They have to do it when they can!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor with a view of the river!!

The reservation desk is on the second floor and no signs directing you to check in. The one elevator working is forever busy so they have signs that you could use the service elevators, but we got dirty looks from the employees for being in their elevator. They are renovating and they started work outside our room at 6 am. Hanging textured wallpaper that sounded like a child screaming. Our bathroom smells like someone vomitted everywhere. The cable system is old and you can't tell what channel you're on.

My extended family selected this location for a family reunuion (11 adults, 9 kids between 1 and 17 years old) because it was central to everyone. None of us had been there before. We read the reviews while we were travelling there. The significant number and degree of negative reviews set our expectations. We even considered finding another place before we even arrived, based on the reviews alone. We were pleasantly surprised. While the hotel was under renovation, one of the two elevators did not work, and the water park was rusty, it was not a horrible experience as we anticipated. Mike the Bellman was great! We had a larger room due to having a group of 6 and the room itself was small, but appeared to be updated and relatively clean. There was an unpleasant odor in some of the hallways that reminded me ot a greasy restaurant. The waterpark was good for young kids (10 and under), OK for kids 11 - 12, but a bit small and mild for anyone between 13 and grandparent age. The elevator was a minor hassle, as we were never in a big hurray. Our tetanus shots are current, so the rust was not a big concern. The smell and the appearance of renovation were the biggest drawbacks. Don't select this hotel if you aim to impress anyone important, but it's OK for the right young family with current immunizations. Also regarding the elevator, I understant that it's been not working for three weeks and that OTIS has one of its best men "on it." Time to get him off it and after feeding and bathing him, get him back to work! Make sure items in your vehicle are secured. I had a bike light stolen off of bike in parking lot.

Room Tip: I would suggest a room further away from restuarant, as the smell may not be as noticable.

This place was a MESS! I stayed one night and I will not go back. The room was $199.00 and included entry for 4 into the run down waterpark. The day we were there one of the two elevators was not working and so trying to get up and down to the water park from our sixth floor room took f-o-r-e-v-e-r. They were even having guests use the service elevator!
I was hoping that my disappointment in the hotel/rooms would be quelled by my enjoyment at the waterpark, however, that was not the case. Much of the equpment has rust on it, the water was warm like bathwater, and the air was stifling. It was disgusting. I cannot believe I paid $200.00 for such a miserable experience. YUCK.......

Dear Guest from Humbolt, IA,

Thank you for your recent comments regarding your stay. I am aware of our elevator problems during your stay and I can only say that we are at the mercy of the elevator repair company who is trying to diagnose our repairs. Allthough they are worn from continued use, we do open our service elevator to try to accomodate our guests during such down times. Also with the extreme conditions outside our water park does get warmer than normal causing warmer water temperatures but it is being regulated. We are currently under hotel renovations in our rooms, lobby, and hallways. We have conducted some restoration in our water park and more to go as time and occuupancy permit. The environment and the 52,000 weekend guests a year are harsh on the equipment. Thank you again for you comments and we tend to use them to exceed your expectations in the future.
