Redstone Inn & Suites
Ranked #4 of 8 Dubuque B&B and Inns
Reviewed October 7, 2007

The front desk looked a little cluttered with papers when we arrived. The nook with area attraction brochures looked somewhat unorganized too. Lovely siiting room off of main desk. We were handed the key to our room with directions not shown.

Our room was nice enough with a large bay window. The bed had a foam pad between the sheet and mattress. Have stayed in many B&B's and had not seen that before. On the table in the bay window area was a bucket for ice. It was half full of water and I never did find an ice machine although we were told there was hot water for tea or hot chocolate.

The bathroom was large. The heat light did not work. There was a tear in one of the bath towels. Something was dripped on the front on the vanity and the tissue box was empty.

Breakfast was served in another small sitting room on the main floor. It was part continental part hot. The had a self serve table with breads, cereal, yogurt, fruit and juices. They also offered 3 omelets. We had a feta, tomato, onion and spinach omelet that was very good. It came with a side of bacon or sausage.

There was free reserved parking for Inn customers in a parking lot across the street from the Inn. We were allowed to leave our car parked there after we checked out to do a little shopping.

Like I said, it wasn't the worst but not the best. The best in Dubuque is the Hancock House hands down.

We recently stayed at the Redstone and we had a very nice time. The beds were comfortable, the room clean, the staff was friendly and we had a very nice homemade breakfast to end our stay. There was free wi-fi (offered by the city) and the Redstone was conveniently located near Dubuquefest (which happened to be occurring the weekend we stayed in Dubuque.) We would highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

Our room was the most spacious we've ever had when staying in a bed and breakfast. (Governor's Suite) The whirlpool tub was MASSIVE. This hotel is perfect for traditionalist travelers. We were actually allowed to have a real wood fire, no gas fire places here!!!

Breakfast is better than average. It's pretty standard fare. (omlettes, toast, fruit, cereal, coffee/tea) We have become spoiled by a more gourmet approach to breakfast, so that was a personal preference issue.

The innkeepers are friendly enough. We arrived earlier than we had anticipated, and they took us in right away. However, they are rather cool, hands-off people. Not rude at all, but we are used to B&B people being warmer and chatty.

This is a very old building and does need some repair/ updating. Nothing was worn or dirty, but the latest decorating or renovations were probably done in the late 80's or early 90's. A small wedding or family reunion would love this place. There are tons of rooms and all of them feature a private bath, which is really great in such an historic building.

Nice location and parking. You can walk to some cute shops and better restaurants. But.... being "Galena people" we are used to all the shopping being located in a centralized downtown. Dubuque is much more spread out and requires more driving and metered parking.

This is a nice place and Dubuque is a wonderful town, but next time we will stay in Galena and drive over to Dubuque to shop.

We loved the Antique Salvage Warehouse.... worth the trip!!!

This was my first B&B experience in the U.S. and I certainly enjoyed it. Charming rooms, antiques, but all the modern conveniences, including wireless internet.
I travel a lot for business usually staying at Hoilday or Residence Inns. This was such a pleasant change. And the perfect touch is Maddie, the border collie. I miss my dog. So having Maddie there at the door to greet me was wonderful. And I even got to give her the saved corner of my breakfast toast.

... the place to stay is the Redstone Inn with Jerry and Kelly Lazore. Maddie the border collie quietly !! and graciously greets you at the door; the rooms are wonderful and the architecture, especially if you enjoy the Victorian era, is breathtaking. Breakfast is local fare of the finest quality -- eggs and veggies from the farmers' market went into our made-to-order omelettes; the toast is even baked by local nuns! Jerry is a fountain of knowledge on local lore and a great short order chef. The Inn is warm and inviting (the neighbor even runs in on occasion for a cup of coffee in the mornings) in the perfect quiet location to enjoy Dubuque (don't miss out on the charming shops on Bluff Street and we thoroughly enjoyed our paddle wheeler ride on the Mississippi), my daughter and I had a terrific time here.

This lovely old Victorian inn is truly charming. I stayed in a large room with a good view on the third floor. The lobby and dining area are truly very charming, with elaborate woodwork, stained glass, and period light fixtures. It does not suffer from any measure of 'cuteness' that makes some B&Bs so unbearable.

The rooms are furnished with antiques. In my room there was a very nice platform rocker, though on another chair the springs were shot. I was pleased to find that the room was well appointed with all of the amenities, including and ironing board, iron , hair dryer and alarm clock.

Warm cookies were served up in the afternoon, and breakfast consisted of continental offerings as well as eggs, omelettes, bacon and sausage made to order.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Guests are given a key to the outside door so they can come and go 24 hours. The location is good for walking.

This is a perfect place for people who are more interested in character or history more than the predictability of chain hotels. Like most B&Bs, it is necessary to take stairs, there is not business center, pool, or fitness room, but for people who do not need those things, I highly recommend the Redstone Inn.
