We've stayed at the Canfield about once every other year for sixteen years. Since the Julien Inn has been renovated into more of a luxury hotel, the Canfield is the best hotel value in downtown Dubuque. Parking is in an unprotected lot across the street, but it's free and we've never had a problem. This hotel is for tourists who just want a clean spacious room in an historic building where they can walk to all the downtown attractions. The Karaoke bar on the ground floor is a comfortable place with a lot of local color, but not audible in any room we've stayed in. This place is not for the business traveler on an expense account or for a honeymoon couple that wants chocolates on their pillow, but for those who appreciate vintage Dubuque this place is a gem. Should you visit the Old Jail museum in Dubuque, check out the circular Life Net on the wall. It was used by firemen in 1946 to rescue guests jumping from a fire in the Canfield.

Scary Place. Good location. My wife and I were here for our anniversary and the "Americas River" music festival. We were immediately taken back by the outside, old, like something out of "Taxi Driver". The inside was the same way, not dirty, just Scary ? Like walking into 1972. Strange odor in the lobby like one of the older Vegas hotels...Baby Powder smell ? ?
and these two native american manequins on the couch ? ? ? and a couple of "transient" residents hanging out in the small lobby area. Just very wierd. We checked in, and took the rickety elevator to our room. It was like walking into my grandmas house when I was a kid. The decor and furniture was very old, a carpeted bar ? The couch was like something I would have had as a hand me down in my 1st apartment (in 1981) it was really that old ! I really felt like I was in a scary movie Everything gave us an uneasy feeling. We never even disrupted the bed, we went downstairs to tell them we weren't staying. The owner was in the lobby (also kinda strange) he told the clerk to refund the charge on our Visa. That never happened and we disputed the charge with the credit card co. The hotel is claiming a 48 hour cancellation policy. Don't stay here unless you have no choice.

We traveled to Dubuque for a party at the Star Restaurant and Lounge (great!) and waited until the last minute to secure a hotel room. All other hotels in town unexpectedly were booked due to a sports tournament, so we ended up staying at the Canfield Hotel. It is located in downtown Dubuque near the Mississippi River. Although the area is a bit sleepy, the city is revitalizing the river walk and there are entertainment options nearby, including the aforementioned Star Restaurant and Diamond Jo Casino.
The hotel itself is by no means fancy and upon first glance, it may seem a little scary. However, the hotel is just stuck in an era gone by and we actually found it to be pretty comfortable once we got settled. Our room was large and had a sitting area with a table and chairs, as well as a fridge and microwave. We also were able to open the windows, which was nice because it was a beautiful day.

Also, the decor is a real treat -- at least if you appreciate kitschy, retro decorating! Several of our friends also stayed here and one of their rooms had a moose head in it! Another one was decorated in black and silver. Ours was pretty tame in comparison, but did have a funky chandelier over the table. There is also a surprise in the lobby, but I don't want to give it away!

The Canfield is also quite cheap. Our room was one of the most expensive at $70 + tax for four people and two full-size beds. However, it would only have been $60 + tax if there were fewer people.

Our only big complaint was the bathroom. I am 5'4" and I had to duck down to wet my hair under the spout. Also, bring your own shampoo as the hotel does not provide any.

If you're looking for a cheap (but clean) place to stay and don't mind the unusual, stop by the Canfield!
