I've been on trams, elevators, railcars before. But this is unique with a small fee. Small, personal, getting from up to down steep hill and back. Just ring the bell at the bottom for return. It works on pulleys so both cars are running up and down. Shops are at the bottom though some closed in winter.

Every time I go to Dubuque for a day trip, I stop at the Fenelon Elevator. There is such a gorgeous view from the top, and a lot of neat history surrounds it. I wish it was open in the winter time, although I bet those cars would be pretty chilly! My kids love it, I have taken numerous adults friends there, too. Everyone seems to enjoy going to the top of the hill in the elevator and experiencing the view of Dubuque!

Wish it was open so we could go up on it-we will have to come back when weather is warmer. Nicely decorated for the Christmas holiday.

The elevator was a special surprise and made the trip memorable. Its just a short ride up the hill, but the cars are so unique. The view on the top of the three states was nice. The are a few nice shops at the base.

This is the steepest incline railway in the world, and it may be short, but it is impressive! The Fenelon Place Elevator has been in operation since 1882. When I was a little kid in the 1970s, my school group took a field trip to Dubuque, and the only thing I remember is that elevator. You'd think it would have grown in my imagination, but the truth is, the car itself was the only thing that was smaller; that incline was just as steep and just as high. It costs very little to take the trip to the top. Try to find a local to point out what you're looking at once you get there. Also, Cable Car Square is a boutique shopping area at the base of the elevator; little specialty shops and art galleries make it a fun place to see and experience, and downtown Dubuque is only a couple blocks away. No place is greener than Dubuque in the spring, so make it a point to visit the third weekend in May when Dubuquefest art festival is happening, and ride the elevator. There will be live music, a big art fair, lots of activities Good times! It's worth the trip.
