This hotel is very convenient to DSM, the staff is friendly & competent, and the facilities are clean & well-maintained. This is an outstanding stop after a late arrival prior to heading out to Ames, Grinnell, or other parts of Iowa.

Enjoyed our stay very much. We couldnt have asked for a better Hotel or location. Beds were comfortable, room was clean, had a refrigerator and microwave, coffee pot and hair dryer. Very quiet and everyone was respectful.

We stay in a lot of Hampton Inns as we drive across this big country, and we usually have a consistently comfortable experience.

On September 23rd, 2013 we stayed at the Hampton Inn at 5001 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA 50321 near the Des Moines airport and had a different experience. Our room (I think it was #306) was a double-queen bed non smoking room; a configuration we like because the extra bed provides a space to organize our belongings.

The room we had this time was very poorly organized. There is a computer desk against the far wall beyond the second bed. It has a much too large chair that barely fits between the bed and the desk. One has to swivel the chair in order to sit in it and then swivel back to the desk. Of course, nobody can walk past the desk and chair to access the wardrobe closet which is inconveniently located in the back corner of the room at the furthest point from the entrance or bathroom. There is so little open floor space in this room that the only place to leave the luggage is on the spare bed. Put it anywhere else, and you cannot walk around in the room. Also, there was an additional square table in the left corner next to the computer desk with two arm chairs. You cannot get into the chairs because there isn't space for them.

The bed covers comprise a bottom sheet, a top sheet and then a large thick, and TOO WARM comforter. The guests have the option to roast themselves under the comforter or to shiver with just the top sheet covering them. I suppose we could have turned the A/C down to 60° and used the comforter or turned the temperature up to 78° and just used the sheet, but WHY use such an impractical bedding combination? Do the people who design these rooms ever try using one?

The bathroom sink has a marble top and back splash which is incompatible with the single handle faucet and drain control handle. The drain control handle is angled and wedged in so close to the back splash that it is impossible to close the drain. Whoever installed this could not have been unaware that this arrangement could not work. They just didn't care enough to solve the problem. My general impression is that this Hampton Inn building had been constructed for a cheaper line of hotels and the rooms are too cramped to fit the standard Hampton furnishings into it properly.

To their credit, the room was clean enough and this Hampton Inn still provided a good hot breakfast at no extra charge.

Hilton Honors is one of the hotel loyalty programs to which I belong, and Hampton inns are fairly predictable as to the quality of lodging and breakfasts. We were in Des Moines to see "Jersey Boys" ( a must see show by the way !) and I had to choose from among three Hampton Inns. This one was actually the farthest west by a few miles and I had concerns about being right next to the airport, but this turned out to be the best choice. I relied upon other Trip Advisor reviews, and we heard no noise from the airport. I used some of my Hilton points to help offset the costs of the show tickets and travel expenses as Des Moines is 225 miles from home. That is quite a ways to go to see a show, but that is how good "Jersey Boys" is, and it wasn't going to be any closer to us any time soon! All the stores and restaurants one would want are along the same four lane boulevard as is this Hampton, except Red Lobster, which we wanted to go to for dinner, but that was only six miles further northwest. Our room on the first floor was quiet, good size, clean, and comfortable with a good air conditioning unit. There was plentiful free parking, the building is secure, requiring key cards to enter all doors, and the breakfast was typical Hampton, but the coffee is not good. My wife wouldn't even drink it. (The afternoon cookies were excellent, which I have a weakness for.) There was adequate seating for those eating breakfast. With the airport so close, many of the clientele appeared to be business people but there were some families present. The hotel seems to be popular but it was quiet the one night we stayed there. Not sure what would ever bring us back to Des Moines, which is a typical nice, friendly Iowa city, but if we do return, we will stay at this Hampton inn again.

We checked into this hotel late at night with 3 very sleepy small children. The front desk staff was friendly and checked us in fairly quickly. The elevators were located down the main hall (strange set up). We walked into the elevator and was engulfed in HOT air - no air conditioning. Granted it had been 107 during the day but no air in the elevator? Then when attempting to open our room door - of course our key didn't work. I had to go back to the front desk and start all over again. Once in the room we were shocked on how small it was. When the couch was pulled out for the kids there was barely enough room to squeeze by to get to the bathroom. I called down for a blanket for the pullout and they were apparently out of blankets. As it turned out the room was hot and I don't think cooled down until the next morning so blankets weren't really needed anyway. Breakfast was open at 5AM which was great as we had an event we had to be at by 6:30AM and wanted kids to eat before we left. For the money we paid, this was not a good experience. I would not recommend this for a family stop.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your stay. I apologize about the high temperatures in the elevator and in your room. We have had our maintenance supervisor hard at work this week making sure our air conditioners and temperatures in the hallways are at comfortable levels. I am glad that we were able to accommodate the early breakfast, as it was a very busy event over the weekend! I hope you give us another try when future travels bring you Des Moines.

My boyfriend and I spent two nights at the Des Moines airport Hampton Inn last weekend, and we had a very pleasant stay. It was 101 degrees in Des Moines the first day we were there, but our room was nice, clean and cool, the outdoor pool was refreshing, and for the price we truly had no complaints. I used Hilton Honors points the first night, and paid for the second night. It's a quick 5 minute drive to all the great restaurants downtown, or to the interstate. We also enjoyed Skip's restaurant nearby (we should've taken the free Hampton shuttle!). There's a huge HyVee grocery and liquor store three blocks away, in addition to a nice movie theater, Walgreens, and several other retail stores and fast food restaurants, so we liked the location. The fitness center is well equipped with nice equipment, a TV, and cold drinking water, but it could use a fan. We've stayed downtown previously, and while it's nice to be able to walk most places, the Hampton Inn has free parking, free breakfast, quiet rooms, and a convenient location, especially if you're using the airport. I only heard a few planes during daylight hours, which didn't bother either of us. The free breakfast is of average quality, but there are several items from which to choose. As with the Hampton Inn in Duluth, MN, we thought the coffee in the breakfast area is terrible. Make coffee in your room with the provided coffee and machine; it is noticeably better. (A Starbucks is about three blocks north, too.)The staff is very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

Of the hotels that are reasonably priced and close to the airport this is the best one. Just wish they had some kind of edible food available in the hotel or close by for late night arrivals. The Perkins restaurant they recommended was horrible, but the actual hotel was great.

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback during your recent stay with us. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us! Personally, I do wish we would have a better mix of restaurants in our area, especially given that the airport is nearby. Our local restaurants are great, but the mix of familiar restaurants are somewhat weak. That said, we hope to see you again when future travels bring you to Des Moines!
