“Comfortable stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

My husband and I came to Des Moines to work the USA Track and Field National Championships, and we stayed at the Renaissance Hotel for six nights. The Renaissance is housed in a stately building of the sort that "they don't build anymore", in downtown Des Moines. Many things are nearby; a city parking deck is across the street, and good restaurants are within walking distance.

We had a 'deluxe king' room, with a comfortable king-sized bed, plasma TV, internet access. Closet space was ample in a walk-in closet area, which also housed a small refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. Staff were courteous and friendly and housekeeping was efficient. The only complaint my husband had concerned the dresser (smallish, if you're the kind of traveler who prefers to fold and store your things). My only complaint concerned the bathroom -- it's well-appointed with new fixtures and tiling, plenty of thirsty towels, but a pedestal sink instead of a vanity, so there's not much surface area for two people.

Breakfast in the restaurant off of the lobby was very good, with plenty of variety and good service. I would stay here again.

Thank you for your feedback. The USA track and field event in Des Moines is something we hope to see again. We are looking into ways to enhance the sink area to accommodate your personal items. We hope to see you back soon. Maybe for the Olympic trials if we are lucky enough to get it. All the best!

I am in the hotel right now and enjoy every minute. Lobby is posh, rooms are updated and comfy beds. I'd change the type of coffee in the room though. Very nice hotel, and just one or two blocks to restraints and bars. Good customer service.

Okay, the only downside was our room had 2 double (full) beds. I knew this on booking. We have owned several mattress stores so we can sight-size a bed, and my husband's reaction when he glanced and said "is that a full?!?" was hilarious. We've been traveling a lot with king size, so it's a bit of a change. He's almost 6' so we ended up sleeping separately midway through the night, no big deal. Other than that, everything was wonderful. I kept thinking I was in a "fancy city" whenever I was in the hotel - probably because the elevator door was frequently open and ready - a Las Vegas trick. :) The location was within walking distance from tons and tons of food options - much more than I expected from Des Moines. And on Saturday morning there's a GIGANTIC spectacular Farmers Market just blocks away. The bathroom size was just fine - if you've stayed in San Francisco hotels, they were downright spacious! The rooms were very nicely sized, the toiletries were Aveda, and the hair dryer was 1875 watt!!! That's right ladies, you know what I'm talking about! No 2-hour frizzy dries on a 1200 hotel/gym watter! The carpet also seemed fresh and nice. We had no problems with the wifi. And the little candies left on the beds were a nice touch. We would definitely come back.

We were in Des Moines for my son's graduation and had a total of 3 rooms. The staff at the desk did a great job of arranging for all of us to stay in rooms near each other even though the hotel was completely booked for the weekend. The rooms were very nice, roomy and clean. The staff made sure that we had a great time celebrating (thank you Kyle and Sandy) this special occasion. We ate in the restaurant several times, the food was good and very reasonable priced. I would recommend the hotel based on the staff alone, the great rooms were a bonus.

We have stayed at the Renaissance Savery in Des Moines twice now, we have been pleased both times.
The rooms are beautiful and the beds comfy.
The staff is friendly and helpful, the lobby is lovely.

We particularly enjoy the location, right downtown so we could walk everywhere we wanted to be. Walking distance to the East Village, Court Street area (wine bars, regular bars, restaurants, etc.), Civic Center even the farmers market Saturday morning.
We had a wonderful stay.

This is a nice old historic hotel that is conveniently located downtown with access to the skywalk. Good beds, bathrooms are small but ok,and cable works fine. The big downside to this hotel is the wifi access. It is free but was terrible. It shuts off every 2 min or so and you have to reconnect. When it works its ok but its almost unusable because of the dropping signal. Maybe its where my room was but I figure every room should have access. If the manager reads this I was on the 10th floor and the service is absolutely terrible. If you need internet access I do not recommend this hotel. But other than that its a fine hotel for the price

Thank you for your comments. I do apologize for the challenges you had with our free internet service. We are working very hard to find the weakness in the system and are upgrading often to make a stronger signal.

Lived in Des Moines for 10 years and never stayed here but recently had a date night with my wife and stayed at the Savery. What an awesome hotel, very neat, full of history. Great staff, clean and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend this hotel and will stay there again. Must thank the front desk people for the toothbrushes.
