The only thing this hotel has going for it is the location. The rooms are way overpriced , they charge for internet , and they stop serving breakfast at 9am. Also , not the cleanest either...there were the same room service food trays in the hallway for atleast 12 hrs and you had to walk around them . Im glad i didnt have to park a car here because they charge $14 per night. Next time i will be staying at the Marriott or Renaissance.

Having spent a week in Chicago, we headed to Des Moines and the Embassy suites for a couple of days. Very easy to find and we had a lovely room on the 8th (top) floor overlooking the front of the hotel. The two rooms of the suite were large with extra sinks in the lounge and bedroom which were useful. The Manager's cocktail reception was great fun with no limit on number of drinks and as the hotel was very quiet, no queues. Complimentary breakfast was also good and, again, no queues. First night we were leaving the hotel in search of a restaurant when one of the complimentary minibus drivers offered to take us. Just as well he did as the suggested restaurant was closed (it was Sunday) so he took us 'downtown' where there were a couple of choices. He even came back for us afterwards. Next day, as it was rainining, we took the minibus again to the Science Centre and State Capital building, both of which are worth a visit. Everyone in the hotel was very friendly, lots of helpful advice and would have stayed longer if we hadn't had to come home!

  • Liked — the size of the rooms and free extras!
  • Disliked — Slightly dark in the room......

We stayed at this Embassy Suites for one night in the middle of a recent trip.

The location of the hotel was fantastic. The east village was an easy walk from the hotel and then the other direction was the main part of downtown. All very accessible by foot.

The hotel itself is right on the river, and the atrium inside is beautiful. Our room was a typical suite, but could have used just a tad bit of updating. It was not bad at all, and was very clean. I admit I am pretty picky though about decor, so keep that in mind.

The beds were comfortable, and it was very nice to have an extra sink/mirror in the bedroom as well as in the bathroom. There is also a sink and mirror in the small kitchenette.

The staff here were exceptionally friendly and helpful. We had a few extra needs and they were very accommodating.

We slept in and so missed the complimentary breakfast, but there is a great coffee shop just a couple blocks up in the east village called the Vanilla Bean and that got us going for the day.

There were several options for parking. You could self park across the street for $7 per day, or do valet parking outside for $14 per day, or valet covered for $19 per day.

We walked all over during the day and early evening and really enjoyed the area. Even as two females traveling alone, we never felt unsafe.

If you are visiting Drake University, ask about their special rate.

My girlfriend and I decided to stay at the Embassy Suites for a short trip away from the apartment, and a relaxing night in the hot tub. Well, as we were checking in, it stated that the hot tub was closed for maintenance. We knew we were in for it after that.

We went up to the room and the first thing we noticed was water was still in the bath tub. Whether it was left by the cleaning person or not, it was still not cool. The Embassy is still nice, but we expected more for the price we paid.

We still loved the complimentary breakfast though.

Rarely do I find a property where I have nothing (but great feedback) to say. Clean as a whistle (ok there were fingerprints on the bedroom window). Great service. Room was spotless. Carpeting didn't need vacuming. Bathroom was spotless. Bedspread was clean. Etc. Only negatives: one half ounce shampoo and conditioner sizes.

  • Liked — Room was spotless, service was great
  • Disliked — One half ounce shampoo bottles a new low in hotel stinginess

I was looking for a place downtown where I wouldn't need a car. The Marriott and Renaissance were closer but over my budget. The Embassy Suites was $139/night in comparison to over $200 for the Marriott and (closer to $300) the Renaissance, and Embassy Suites includes breakfast.

Breakfast includes made to order omlettes - a real bonus at this price range. And the guy making them was very friendly.

The room was dated (sort of 80s style) but nothing too serious - everything was functional and clean. Bed was comfortable. I had a view from the 5th floor over the river and the river park area, which was beautiful even in early April when its still a bit cold/clowdy (it snowed.)

I can't say that I usually interact that much with the hotel staff, but the girl who checked me in and I saw a few other times went out of her way to be friendly, as did the guy making omlettes in the morning.

I ate at the onsite restaurant the first night and wasn't thrilled - not horrible, just not very good. I found a Thai restaurant about a block away on walnut that was quite good and they do take out.

I walked across the river to downtown with no problem. I also never felt unsafe walking around downtown, even at night (although its pretty deserted at night.) There is a whole system of skywalks around downtown Des Moines, so if you are there in the winter or when its cold/raining, check it out. Almost everything in the skywalk area closes after 5pm though.

If you are going in the summer, I would definitely pick the Embassy Suites - they have a nice outdoor patio on the river side and right on a park-like spot on the river. Not much use in early April, but when its warm, this would be a great spot to relax.
