If you are visiting in Des Moines, there is much to see at our State Historical Building. Young and old will find exhibits of interest, the curators of this museum do a great job of displaying their large collection of historical artifacts.
I always take out of town guests here, it is an interesting way to learn about Iowa, even for Iowans.

We visited the Iowa Historical Museum to see the special exhibit over Iowa's part in the Civil War. The exhibit was very well done. Informative and interesting, with many fascinating artifacts. All aspects of life during the war were covered: women, medical, African Americans, Lincoln, weapons, clothing, camp life, etc. as they related to soldiers from Iowa. This exhibit is free! Absolutely worth an hour or two.

to see the new exhibits as they are changed. Our museum is a very nice new building and full of things that are new to me, as well as items that have been around since my grade school field trips. The bets thing is the library, housed on the third follor - which contains so much archived information for genealogy research. You could spend weeks just looking at the old newspapers on micro fiche!

Our family saw Lincoln at Thanksgiving so since we were visiting Des Moines December 8, we decided to visit the Civil War display at the Iowa State Historical Museum. The display showed the connection Iowa has to the Civil War. Worth a visit.

We really enjoyed touring this museum. The exhibits were interesting and well laid out. The Civil War Exhibit was particularily well done. We just had a couple of hours, which wasn't enough time to really do it justice. There is a small cafe, with limited hours, on the third floor and free parking nearby.
