On a weekend night, this is a 4 block outdoor party, with music food and drinks on the sidewalks. So if that's you, great. We snuck into the Vaudeville Mews for some great music, and actually felt away from the hubub.

Great little neighborhood in Des Moines, with lots of good restaurants, bars and stores. Close to the capital so check that out while you are there.

Take time to walk the 20 minuets to the East Village. Favorite places include: City Bakery, Allspice, Raygun, Hill Vintage and Knits. The artist Vance has a three story mural currently painted on the side of a waste management building. Worth checking out on it's own.

The East Village is a perfect mix of rehabbed buildings, higher end and more casual, quirkier boutiques, great options for eating and drinking regardless of time of day. I love the vibe, which is due largely to the fact that most spots are small, locally owned shops.

Among my favorite spots are Eden (gifts, skin care, candles, too much other fun stuff to mention), East Village Day Spa, The Continental (food/drink), City Bakery (brunch), Found Things, Raygun (quirky, original screen printed shirts and other fun stuff), Sticks (original folk art and other artist made items) - obviously I can go on, and I haven't even come close to mentioning all the great spots.

You just have to go if you are in Des Moines!

New stores opening almost every time we visit. Bohemian and eclectic but needs more outside character like Old Market in Omaha. Street musicians, artists, maybe even carriage rides. Zombie Burgers is a must visit but be prepared to wait in line.
