Butler House on Grand
Ranked #3 of 4 Des Moines B&B and Inns

Generally we really enjoyed our time there. The owners were very friendly, helpful in giving directions and recommendations for attractions in the area. Parking was easy during our stay (it wasn’t a full house, not sure if it is more difficult when all of the rooms are booked) and the breakfast was wonderful. I appreciated the soda/water availability outside of the rooms, free wi-fi, and cable tv. Also, the rooms was plenty warm – no easy feat as it was bitterly cold outside and the house had the potential to be very drafty (but wasn’t). Minor con- the room décor varies, in our room (master suite) the ceiling featured angels looking down over the bed, a little uncomfortable for us, but is personal taste.

My mom, sister and I went to Des Moines to visit family. My brother recommended this place and wow are we glad we have found it. Lauren and Clark, the owners/innkeepers, outdo themselves on a daily basis. Unlike other B & B's, where breakfast is served at a fixed time, the guests may chose a time within a tow hour window to have breakfast. Breakfast itself is such a treat. Upon arriving at the inn, Lauren makes careful notes about food preferences, allergies, likes/dislikes, then basically custom makes each guests' brearact. The accommodations are beyond comfortable and so very charming. Each room is uniquely decorated and appointed and a pleasure to come and go to each day/night. We already have booked a stay for 2014!

Room Tip: The rooms facing Grand have better WiFi than the rooms on the back side, but they are all truly love...

This was the last stop in a line of B&B's on a cross country trip for us. Definitely stood out! To me a B&B should be judged on three things: a unique room, an exceptional breakfast and a relationship with the innkeeper. This one nailed all three.

We stayed in the Dynasty room on the third floor. It had a very nice large jacuzzi tub that we used and liked very much. The room was nicely decorated and comfortable with a nice bed, lots of towels, a soft heavy extra blanket and a beautiful unique vanity. The soap for the room was homemade soap made just for the inn. It smelled amazing like citrus and spice. A very nice touch. Also to be noted were the soft, textured pink towels unique to the room instead of the traditional white ones you see in most hotels.

From the minute we arrived the owner, Lauren, engaged us. We went to sit by the fire in the living room, a nicely appointed room, and she came and sat down with her cup of coffee and chatted with us. A very intelligent, interesting woman who seemed to really want to get to know us! It almost seemed liked she drew the most enjoyment in her work out of meeting and getting to know her guests. She has likely met thousands of guests in her 14 years and we felt like we were the first. Like meeting us was WHY she loves what she does! She had great recommendations for local places to eat. We went to eat and when we came back our bed had been turned down and some salted caramel truffles were left on the pillow. They were yummy!

At breakfast we met the hubby. Just as nice as Lauren. I love that the family lives on site. Their living area is on the bottom floor, separate from the inn but the kids grew up with the business. The inn and home don't intermingle to the point where you feel intrusive (a problem sometimes with B&B's) but just enough to warm you through pictures of the family, pet bunnies in the living room and jack o lanterns on the front steps to remind you that you're in someone's home as a welcome guest.

Breakfast was a baked apple with yogurt and granola, pumpkin pancakes with cinnamon whipped cream and pork sausage. All excellent!

In peeking into other rooms I would like to stay in the Cook's room or the suite that was next to the Dynasty room on the third floor on our next visit (not sure of the name of this one). The latter looked so cozy! It had a bathroom seperate from the room that was beautifully decorated and locked for the sole use of the room's tenant.

We will definitely return! This a family who has met their calling and fallen into their perfect line of work. A beautiful thing.

My partner and I drove to Des Moines from Little Rock to get married on my birthday, and we stayed at this B&B for two nights. A friend booked the room for us as a wedding gift.

From the moment we arrived, we were beyond charmed, not just by the beauty of the enormous house and our incredibly spacious (and wonderfully decorated and appointed) room, but also by the hospitality. Lauren and Clark were wonderfully kind, and Lauren gave us great information not just on what there is to do in Des Moines--as well as how to get around the city--but also on the city's history, including the histories behind its various attractions. She's a wealth of knowledge, and every bit of it is useful, and it greatly enriched our experiences in visiting the city's sights.

Breakfast both mornings we were there was a great experience, too. The food was incredible, and the service in the beautiful dining room was as fabulous as everything else Lauren and Clark did for us.

Though we were only there two nights/days, I must say I'm rather taken with this place. It's a gorgeous house with gorgeous rooms, and it's owned and staffed by some of the most gracious hosts I've ever encountered, and that's really saying something, considering I'm from the south. Also, its location is superb, being in one of the nicest, grandest areas of Des Moines, including being literally right across the street from a world-class art museum and a sprawling park and rose garden, all of which is free to visit.

I look forward to going back on our wedding anniversary, and I highly recommend this B&B to anyone who wants a truly grand experience in Des Moines.

Room Tip: The Retreat is the room in which we stayed, and it's huge. It has plenty of furniture for frien...

We absolutely love the Butler House in Des Moines, the stunning Tudor architecture, beautifully decorated rooms ( by Stick's), comfortable beds, wonderful filling breakfast. However, a big attraction is the conversations with Clark and Lauren-they are treasure trove of information, on Des and all of Iowa.
We have been going there for our anniversary-compliments of our Des Moines attorney for the last 6/7 years-it has become a very enjoyable tradition. We usually have dinner at Baru 66-great restaurant.

The house is a 1920's-vintage Tudor home majestically situated on a hill across from the Des Moines Art Center. The innkeepers and their family maintain their residence in the house and provide 7 uniquely decorated rooms for guests on the 2nd and 3rd floors. We stayed in the Dynasty Room, which featured a 3/4 bath, a separate jacuzzi tub and wicker furniture, all overlooking Greenwood Park across the way.

My wife and I stayed two nights in celebration of our anniversary, visiting the Art Center, the Des Moines Farmers' Market and the Iowa State Fair. The location was, of course, very convenient to the Art Center and centrally located in the Des Moines metro. Any major destination is an easy drive, or even by bike, as the house is located close to the extensive recreational trail system. My morning run featured a tour of Ashworth/Greenwood Park, Water Works Park and the Western Gateway Park, all connected by Des Moines' trail system and immediately accessible from Butler House.

Clark and Lauren were a wealth of information on local events. For example, for our visit to the farmers' market, Lauren provided directions to the best location for free parking. We will most assuredly stay here again, as the rates are similar to a stay at one of the luxury hotels downtown, but with so much more character and personal service. You will not want to miss the delectable breakfast, either (special dietary restrictions were handled without a second thought).

My first trip to Des Moines and did i feel like the pampered one! Lauren and Clark thought of everything, even the bug spray for walks on the nearby trail. Breakfasts were outstanding and stocking the second floor fridge with soft drinks and water was most thoughtful.. And when it came to directions, Lauren was spot on. All this and a beautiful restored home in a great neighbor.
