“Ho Hum.”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

I was excited to try Chuck's, as it is a DSM staple. Our service was slow, the food mediocre, and the prices were on the high side. Our daughter's dinner came out about 10 minutes after the rest of the food was delivered. Our Margherita pizza was soggy and was uncooked in the middle. I won't be going back to Chuck's.

“An Underwhelming Des Moines Classic”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

Chuck's is yet another old Des Moines staple, serving up mostly Italian classics like Baked Lasagne, Chicken Parmigiana and Cavatelli along with some more traditional American fare like steaks, fish and burgers. The pizza is what it's known for, though, and on a recent visit, we found the buzz didn't disappoint. The crust is cracker thin and the toppings, while plentiful, did not overwhelm. Not the best pizza I've ever had, but certainly among the best.

However, that's pretty much where reality living up to hype ended. The onion rings that other reviewers have given high marks were, in our opinion, sadly average-not thin or thick, medium cut with a tasteless, though crisp, batter. They were not very flavorful and would have benefited from either a spiced batter or some sort of dip. The atmosphere was 1970's lounge, with markedly aged, if comfortable, seating and decor. Our server was kind but terribly slow and would have been an issue if we had been in a hurry.

Another irritant: kinda pricey. Several things you can usually count with the old Des Moines classic restaurants: dated decor, lack of flashy anything, reliable, traditional dishes and low prices. Not so with Chuck's. Our pizza was about the size of a dinner plate and cost about $16. There were 4 small slices per person, with 2 of those slices barely fitting the description of a slice. Granted, it was tasty, but for the price, I would expect a larger pizza from any restaurant, much less a Des Moines classic. A quick glance at their menu shows most dishes are in the $14-$20 range with the exception being the burgers.

Chuck's has live music on weekends and I know many people swear by the place and some of the dishes. And while the pizza was good, next time we'd order carryout, nix the boring onion rings and skip an underwhelming dining experience.

Great pizza, good price, better than expected. Chuck's has survived because they know what matter's most and they back it up with good service.

“Great Italian Food!”
Reviewed July 14, 2012

We were in Des Moines visiting family recently & dined @ Chuck's on a Thurs. night: the place was very popular! Some people had a Groupon they were using & it was Crazy Busy! We had 2 pasta dishes & a pizza! The food is incredible! Everything is Homemade & it shows! We had eaten there one other time on a Sat. Eve & expected it to be busy, which it was! Would definitely recommend this place! They also understand Old-fashioned Good Customer Service! What a treat!
