“Feed your inner Epicurean...”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

While traveling through D.M. I stopped here today to treat myself and now by coincidence, I turned on Iowa Public TV tonight and found the re-run of the show, Iowa Ingredient, highlighting this wonderful shop and their chef! The shop's selection of cheese is exceptional...after trying many different kinds I decided on a French Gruyere and Flory's Truckle (which I didn't know was from Van Buren County Iowa's own Milton Creamery until I saw the label! I love the Milton Creamery and their Prairie Breeze cheese). The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Visiting The Cheese Shop is a must when I am in Des Moines. After you find wonderful cheeses, visit the Vom Fass and La Mie Bakery just a few doors down and get specialty vinegars/oils/spirits and French breads, etc. with which to enjoy with your cheese. All places are easy to find, there is parking in the back and you won't be sorry...the unassuming building right off of I-235 on 42nd street is host to a flavorful and sophisticated trio of specialty culinary shops in Des Moines!

“Shop too small for great big value”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

This tiny shop in the Roosevelt Shopping Center is attracting a lot of attention in DM. The owner knows a lot about cheese and can talk to you about particulars and make recommendations for your specific questions. Their fondue is great as is their macaroni and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches. If you are a cheese lover, you will love The Cheese Shop.

“fun spot”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

Fun little spot for wine and cheese tasting – lots of cheese to chose from and nice selections of wines by the glass, or buy a bottle and they’ll pop the cork for you there!

“Wish i lived next door”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

If you love eating cured meats and fine cheeses, come and enjoy yourself. 1/2 cheese shop -1/2 restaurant. If you are going to eat with friends, keep in mind that here are only about 6 or 8 tables though, so you may have to wait. They sell a limited section of beer and wine as well. It's only a few doors down from La Mie bakery, so get a wheel of brie and then run down there a grab a loaf of crunchy french bread, and you are set!

“You'll love it!”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

Ate here three times in the past two weeks: first time, enjoyed a great dark beer in a tulip glass and savored some double-cream bleu cheese and bread, Returned with friends, enjoyed wine, beer, cheese plate, olives (fantastic-not like the supermarket) nuts and cornichons. Brought a loaf of foccacia from La Mie Bakery just a few doors down, some garlic olive oil from Vom Fass (next door) and they happily peppered and grated fresh Parmesan for our dipping sauce! Friendly service.
Third visit went for lunch and had a "toastie:" oozy-gooey artisan cheeses on excellent bread. My favorite was a toasted ham and cheese (best ham ever-must be Niman Ranch) covered with a fried egg and Mornay sauce: unbelievably good. Tremendous selection of help-yourself wines and beers.
