I travel to Des Moines routinely on business. Was introduced to this boutique hotel a few years ago after utilizing the Marriott and Embassy Suites a few times. This has become my preferred place in this city.
Reasons:
Huge rooms
Comfortable beds
Fantastic free breakast omelets
Cozy lobby lounge for evening chats with colleagues
Never noisy
Walking distance to great restaurants and offices
Great personalized service at the front desk
Occasional celebrity spotting, from reporters to Presidential candidates to the Crown Prince of Denmark.

This is an old hotel that has been refurbished. The service was fantastic. The complimentary breakfast is not the usual pre-packaged fare, the chef cooks eggs, waffles, etc and the other choices include many muffins, cereal, bagels, fruit, juices, etc. It has about 10 times what the average hotel breakfast has. The room was very clean and comfortable. Might have been the best hotel mattress I've ever slept on....we even pulled up the sheet to see what brand it was !!!
I would 100% recommend this hotel

This is a nice hotel. It has historic qualities that make it different from staying at the Marriott or other chain hotels.
I had 2 complaints, 1. they have to get rid of the bedspreads and change to washable duvet covers. 2. They have one very nice man making breakfast in the am, but it took a half an hour to get one omlette. I would rather pay for my breakfast and have more people working. They also have no room service.
The location of this hotel is convenient to walking to good restaurants such as the 801 steakhouse and many others.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room

The venue is great in a historic building in downtown Des Moines. Beautifully refurbished on the inside. The staff is excellent and the bar is comfortable and relaxing. Nice quiet alternative to the big chain hotels.

I've now stayed here twice once in January and again in February for business. Both times my sponsoring business set me up in one of the "fireplace" rooms (presumably to make a good impression with me.) The breakfast was a huge letdown, mostly continental-type items unless you are around when the chef is available to make pancakes/waffles. The internet, wired and wireless, was ridiculously slow. I could not even pull up my work emails and had to actually walk down the street to Starbucks to use the internet. The staff however were extremely friendly and genuinely curious about my stay. They had recognized that I had been here before and welcomed me back. If this were my dime, I would not have gotten this place.

this place is a rundown dump. suite hotel? no. the rooms are not suites. rather, they have maybe one or two extra feet between the bed and the tv. the assistant manager said that constituted a suite. maybe in iowa. valet parking? no. there isn't even parking on site. there isn't even a motor entrance. you park on the street to unload your own car then park off site--yourself. robes? no. slippers? no. run-down? yes. 70s decor? yes. dingy? yes. flat screen TV? no. unpleasant tub-shower? yes. extremely soft water, so that it take 20 minutes to rinse? yes. avoid this terrible place at all cost. stay at one of the nice new, and cheaper hotels, on the interstate. ps: the assistantt manager was unaccommodating.

1. 48 hours cancellation fee...no exceptions
2. Rooms outdated
3. No parking at hotel
Overall I thought it was way way over rated and the service was just below expectations.
