Went to have lunch at Smokey D's while on a business trip to Des Moines. My hosts said this was a lunch place to not miss, so we headed there.
My first impression was daunting, as there were lots of people streaming into the restaurant so I was worried we wouldn't get a table. Not to worry, when we went inside there was lots of space. Ordering was easy and fast from the order window, then we were handed what I thought was a "buzzer" that would summon us to get our food-- what it turned out to be was a "locating device" that told the servers where to find us.
I ordered pulled pork, my friends ordered ribs, and one guy had the biggest pork tenderloin sandwich I had ever seen. Food came really fast and was very tasty-- 5 choices of BBQ sauce ranging from the wimp sauce (me) to the Extra Fiery (one guy lathered it on his ribs). Cole slaw and beans were great as well!
Looking forward to heading back next month for another trip and to check out more of Smokey D's offerings!
GREAT BBQ! The burnt ends were flavorful and tender! I have never had such moist tender BBQ chicken, WOW!!!
The potato hot dish was good but skip the beans- they tasted like they were from a can. Wish we lived lived closer to Des Moines- I'd eat there all the time!
We have eaten here many times. The BBQ is always amazing. The only negative thing I have to say about Smokey D's is that they way oversalt the chips and fries. I want to love their homemade chips, but after eating only a few, my mouth is already starting to get sore. Their other sides are also good and just what you'd expect in a BBQ restaurant. The beer is always cold. You order your food at the window and then grab your table. The food comes out hot and ready to eat. We've never had to wait very long to get our food.
Stopped in last night to eat here for the first time. The line was pretty long for ordering, but it went fairly quick. I had the 2 meat platter. I chose the smoked sausage and beef brisket, with coleslaw and mac n cheese for my sides. The meat was sooo good! Sausage has flavor, but it isn't super spicy. The brisket was great too! The mac was so great, and very unique flavor. If you like a good BBQ, this place will not disappoint you! The prices are very reasonable too. I think my platter was just under $12.
