We liked this bed and breakfast inn. We found the hosts to be very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the Duncan Room, the only one with a private bath. The room had a very home-like, welcoming feel. It had wallpaper with bouquets of flowers in pink, plum, blue, and green. The coverlet and curtains were matelasse in a fresh light green, and there was a pink area rug. The queen bed was comfortable. There's a small TV and a ceiling fan, and the room had much better lighting than most places we've stayed. The good-sized bathroom has a two-person whirlpool tub but no shower; it too was attractively decorated. The rollaway bed we requested for our son is smaller than the usual rollaway, so probably most adults would not find it comfortable. We were able to look at one other guest room; it was good-sized and painted a rich khaki-green.
There is a small upstairs sitting area next to the stairs. (Unlike most b and b's, where at least one parlor is open to guests, this one had all the downstairs rooms closed off while we were there, so if you need a sitting room that will seat more than two people, be sure you ask whether that would be available to you.) There's also a kitchen upstairs which is available to guests, and there's a bookshelf full of magazines there. Breakfast is served there (or on the large porch), and the hosts are flexible about serving it at the time you prefer. Our breakfast was excellent and consisted of coffee, orange juice (it tasted fresh-squeezed), a hot omelet-like casserole, coffee, bread (there's a toaster there, and they even had black-raspberry jam), a platter of various fresh fruits, and a fruit cobbler with whipped cream.
The inn is on a hill, but there is a flat area to park. There's also a church parking lot behind it which the hosts told us it would be all right to use (we weren't there on a Sunday). We were very comfortable at this inn and expect to stay there again. And while you're in Decorah, be sure to visit the Vesterheim, which is a very high quality museum and much larger than it looks. (They even have a tall boat in there.) We also enjoyed the food at the restaurant right next door to the museum.
