Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Council Bluffs, IA
Ranked #2 of 25 Hotels in Council Bluffs

Very pleasant service at this Country Inn, including a shuttle bus driver who seemed positively disappointed that he couldn't take me anywhere. Facilities comfortable, clean, what you would expect from one of the more upscale motel chains. But there's an extra, which I gather some chains are now featuring: in addition to free breakfast, there's the free "manager's special" from 5 to 7 p.m. in the same area off the lobby, with free beer, free wine, free munchies. (It's not quite free dinner, but some people might be able to manage with it.)

The surprising thing about this motel is its location. It's not precisely in Council Bliuffs, which is what I originally was looking for when I hunted up somewhere to stay in this area. It's in nearby Carter Lake, Iowa. However, thanks to a quirk in the geography (the state line wiggles one way while the Missouri River wiggles the other way) , you can't get to this place without going through a corner of Nebraska. Unfortunately, the corner in question is downtown Omaha. (But the driving there wasn't as bad as I had feared.) There are apparently several other chain hotels in Carter Lake. This one stands some distance from any of the others, its nearest neighbours being an abandoned drive-in restaurant and a recently refurbished "gentlemen's club".

I found the room rate very high, probably reflecting the hotel's closeness to the big city.

We stayed here for two nights and had a King Suite. The room was comfortable, clean and spacious. The bedroom also had a privacy door that closed off from the living room area... what a great feature! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The kids had fun at the pool and the location was close to a casino, gas station and the Henry Doorly Zoo. Very convenient! The breakfast area had plenty of seating which isn't always the case with hotels that have free breakfasts. It was especially helpful since there was a reunion booked the weekend we stayed. The bathroom was small and once you pulled out the hideaway bed, it was hard to move around. These are minor complaints and this was a solid hotel stay.

Stayed one night on a road trip. Nice, clean room. Clean, warm pool and spa. Nice exercise room. Good breakfast with more hot items than most hotels. It was pretty busy and hard to find a place to sit and get the food you wanted but the staff seemed to be working hard to restock as it was very busy. We went to the casino for dinner and there's a yummy, reasonably priced restaurant called JB's Cafe that was delicious. Great experience here and I would return again if ever in the area.

I am now looking for reasons to go to Council Bluffs simply because I love this motel so much. It is a typical Country Inn with nice rooms and a pleasant staff, but the secret to why I like it so much is location, location, location. I stumbled across it a couple months ago while pricelining a trip from Minnesota to Denver (it is almost exactly half-way). Imagine my delight to find it surrounded by excellent restaurants, lovely casinos, and, most importantly to me, a deluxe AMC theatre from which, this last trip, I watched a movie (following a long day's drive) from a built-in Barcolounger. Travel doesn't get much better than this and, for me, the Council Bluffs Country Inn truly gives me a sense of finding an oasis. Now, if I can just find an excuse to spend a week in Council Bluffs.

P.S. Even their free hot breakfast is a cut above -- eggs, biscuits and gravy, and potatoes -- not just those do it yourself waffles.

As with all the hotels my husband and I stayed at during a recent bus trip, this had some good points and bad points. The room was clean and the size was generous, but only one luggage rack was provided even though there were two (comfortable) queen size beds. Bathroom did not have an exhaust fan or grab bars in the tub but I did like the built in night light plus the micro and refrigerator in the room. Another negative was lack of extra plugs near the bed for my C-PAP, but the great breakfast made up for some of the drawbacks of the room, especially since the staff came in early to serve the passengers on our bus.

We elected to stay in Council Bluffs while on a trip to Omaha (Downtown Omaha was too expensive for the nights we wanted). Location-wise, this was decent. Access to downtown Omaha is actually much easier than from other hotel regions within Omaha.
The hotel is located across from a large casino and in the midst of numerous other small hotels and chain restaurants. Area is flat and open. The immediate area is rather dull, but again, access to Omaha is very easy.
We checked in about 2:30 pm, and there were about 3 cars in the lot. By 5, there were probably 50. Check-in was very smooth and easy and friendly.
The hotel seemed to be constructed a bit cheaply; the floors bounced a bit. We requested the top floor to avoid foot noise from rooms above us. The room had a fridge and a microwave and was quiet enough.
Nice indoor pool area with hot tub. Breakfast was free and definitely decent (crowded). Wifi was free and worked well.
We'd stay here again if downtown Omaha (which can vary greatly in price) is too expensive.

Room Tip: I would request a top floor room. The floors seemed bouncy and loud.

I wish all towns had this hotel. The staff is always kind and you don't have to wait a long time to check in. The rooms are always clean, the bathrooms are very roomy and clean, love that they always have a fridge in the room and microwave, but best of all...the BEDS are the MOST COMFY AROUND! My key card always works, I can get snacks and all the ice I want, and know that I'll get a great night's sleep and not have to check out till Noon. As I said before, I wish all towns had a "Country Inn & Suites"
