“Memorably great”
Reviewed May 20, 2014 via mobile

This is a truly excellent sushi restaurant that strikes a perfect balance of Japanese steak house with some other Asian fusion classics available as well. Attention to details, extremely fresh product, and a relaxed vibe made Konomi a wonderful dining experience. All staff we encountered were delightful, kind, and professional. Worth stopping for if you're traveling through, and if you're lucky enough to live close by I'm sure you already know what we just discovered. Instant classic. Awesome

The food was excellent and so was the service....great waiter that was very familiar with all things on the menu and helped us with our choices which were absolutely delicious. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who enjoys fine Japanese dining!

“Top quality food - without the typical snooty wait staff.”
Reviewed February 14, 2014

Japanese dining has been ruled by one big blue elephant in the Iowa City/Coralville area. And yes, you can get good quality Japanese in the middle of the Midwest - no, there isn't a sushi shack on every corner (right next to the Starbucks) typical of the costal metros, but the stuff you find in this area will surprise you.
I've written nice stuff about the great place in downtown IC, and I'm more than happy to go back there - large space, big fish tank to look at while you're waiting for the waiter to deign to take your order...where did they get these people, LA? Even New Yorkers would grab the guy by the arm after the sixth slow pass, then only to speed up if your Iowa sweatshirt isn't pressed to his liking.
Now that I've been to Konomi in Coralville, I know that I can get quality food (perhaps fresher?) with an attentive, friendly, and helpful staff.
My wife and I decided that for Valentine's Day, we'd skip the 'prix fixe' overpriced dinners and just find a place to order off the menu. We had not been to Konomi, and decided to give it a try. We arrived around 5:30 - they opened at 5, and they were pretty busy. We ended up waiting for 20 or so minutes for a two-top. That's fine - the big-screen TV in the waiting area (with comfty leather seating) had the remote on the coffee table, and we proceeded to switch from Nick to HGTV. We did notice that they do a bustling take-out; my wife asked someone who just received her food what was good, and we listened attentively.
The main dining area is small, with a large sushi bar separating this dining space from the 'teppan' area, where you can have the whole 'Benihaha' routine. There is a sizeable bar near the back entrance - the restaurant is on the tail end of the first phase of the Iowa River Landing, Coraville's major mixed-use development. After five minutes or so, a waiter came up and asked if we had been waited on; when we said no, he announced that he was now our waiter. We had looked at the menu online (now typical for us), and the only question was the size and portions of the maki. He was very knowledgeable about the food served. We settled on the Konomi roll.
Our soup (comes with the entrée) arrived first - a miso soup with scallions, and a clear, chicken broth-based soup with fried onions. Both were quite tasty and well seasoned - not a lot of sodium, which you usually find in Japanese cuisine. We were also given a plate of edaname - also not overly salty. The konomi maki arrived - beautifully presented and unbelievably fresh! It was gobbled up with gusto.
We had a bit of time to digest before the entrees came out, and we looked at the maki, rolls, and sushi presented at other tables - all beautifully crafted. The came the entrees - beef GyuDon and chicken Yakisoba. The beef was thinly sliced and very tender, yet not overly seasoned, served properly with sticky rice. The yakisoba was delicately seasoned, with no individual ingredient taking over the dish. That was a feature we noticed in the entire meal - they are very careful with spices here, allowing the patron to flavor the dish more if they desire. And I'm not saying that the food is bland - far from it. It's great to find a place where flavors are so delicately melded together.
We did not have drinks or dessert (we actually went to Backpocket after), and our dinner was under $50. We will definitely be back to Konomi!

“A good option”

This is tied for out favorite IA City sushi restaurant. Good fish and good service. A better selection of rolls would be nice. Current selection is short and heavy on the tempura.

“Classy, fun, delicious!”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

This restaurant is very modern and sleek. It's nestled into an up and coming area in Coralville and is conveniently located near the interstate and next to hotels, an event center, and a brewery. I've had several lunches and dinners here and I've tried just about everything on the menu! The food and drinks are delicious! My favorite roll is not on the menu, but they always make it for me and it is perfect every time. The service is great and if you choose the grill, be prepared to be entertained! This is perfect for an intimate date, meeting friends at the bar for cocktails, or even big groups! Seriously the best Sushi in town!
