“Glorious 1890's Living in high Society.”
Reviewed August 18, 2012

Have visited his many times since 1978. Everything in this home of Iowa's 12th Governonr is all orginal as the family kept everything just as it was when Mrs. Larrabee died in hte early 1900s. Some excellant Art pieces and it was all given to the State of Iowa. It is a Free Museum with free guided tours from spring to fall. The State has maitained it well so we can see an actual piece of Iowa's History.

“Interesting house, beautiful views”
Reviewed July 11, 2012

This beautiful old home is open for tours. The guides are enthusiastic about their job and know lots of stories about the original residents. The grounds are also quite nice, and I wish I had had more time to walk around the grounds.

On the way to the house, I saw signs for tours of historic Clermont, which I'm sure would also be interesting.

“Don't Miss this if you're anywhere near”

Wow....be sure to take in an organ recital at the Union Sunday School during "the season" (summer through fall). A spectacular example of 19th c. American pipe organ building with excellent performers on deck.

“Surprise attraction in Iowa”
Reviewed November 5, 2011

We were working out way to New Hampton, Iowa on US Hwy 18 when we happened up this grand old home up on a hill. It turned out to be Montauk - home of Iowa's 12th governor, William Larrabee. Unfortunately, it was not open so we only saw the outside of the building and the outbuildings. Still - it was a very nice stop. Enjoy the Civil War statues around the groups and there are interpretive signs that explain who Governor Larrabee was and how he was important not only to Iowa, but to progressive legislation on a national level. Next time we'll try to get there during open hours!
