“Very Moving”

Plane Crash Site of Buddy Holly
Ranked #2 of 13 things to do in Clear Lake
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 12, 2013

There is a Memorial to Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper Richardson at the site of the plane crash were they died about 5 miles north of Clear Lake, Iowa. It is about 1/2 mile walk from a dirt road in the middle of a corn field. It is a simple memorial but very moving and well worth the visit.

Walking along the fenceline to the crash site can be a bit difficult when the corn is fully grown and clods of dirt can trip your step, but this historical journey is a must. The important thing to remember is to remain on the south side of the fenceline so that when you approach the site you are not forced to jump over a barbed wire fence. The visits here are never the same as visitors leave multiple offerings of their affection for Buddy, Ritchie, and the Big Bopper. While it is indeed a site of tragic death and loss, it is also a place of reverence where fans can pay their respects to three of rock 'n rolls founding fathers.

There are very few directions to the site, very rough farm field to walk in to get to the site. It is free and well worth it, but just way too hard to get to it.

This low-key memorial site looks well-visited even thought it is a bit out-of-the-way, being located on a private farm. It is not easy to find, so do some research before heading out.

This is a great memorial to the three musicians who died that day. It is simple, secluded, and quiet. Guided by Buddy Holly's glasses at the corner of Gull Ave and 315th St, you can walk down about a quarter mile to the crash site in the field and pay your respects; it is so kind of the landowners to allow travelers to enter their private property.
