“Beautiful & Relaxing Getaway!”
Reviewed February 22, 2012

We stayed at the Red Cedar Lodge (Eagle's Nest) in January and everything was perfect. The owners were great and very accomodating. There was a snow storm and Lorraine called to make sure we new about it and said we could check in early. Tom made sure the outdoor fire & hot tub were ready for us even though it was 10 below zero & snowing. Trails were plowed through the woods so we could go for a walk - it was great! Cabin was immaculate & stocked with everything you could possibly need. It was perfect for a romantic getaway & I highly recommend the Lodge for any type of event. Good view from any cabin. Eagles nest is a bit more secluded but the others have a better view of the river so depends on what you like.

Wow, so nice of you to post a review! We remember your visit well ~ we were all so excited for a snowy weekend and storm! We appreciate that you enjoyed Red Cedar Lodge enough to help encourage others to choose us for a Couple's Getaway.

We pride ourselves in our cabins being "immaculate" and fully stocked with essentials in the kitchen. We hope that guests like you will come again and again and regret the time to go home. :)

Thanks for the details in your post about our cabin locations, view and kudo's for Tom's fire building skills~ his favorite thing! Come back to see us and enjoy a fun kayak trip on the Cedar!

Everything about this place was excellent. I was warmly greeted by the owners who had all of the local attractions and happenings printed out for the dates of my stay. I won the opportunity to stay here in a raffle, but I would happily pay to stay again anytime. Upon entry to the cabin (I stayed at the Eagles Nest), I wanted to move in! It was very clean and inviting. The full kitchen was much appreciated, as my family and I prepared all of our snacks for the weekend at the cabin. Being a Naturalist (Environmental Educator) I loved the location along the river: lots of wildlife and great fall scenery.
The only thing I would have changed was being able to stay longer!

Chelsea E,

Thanks so much for the enthusiastic review and nice description of your visit at Red Cedar Lodge! With your background as a Naturalist, we had hoped you would enjoy our quiet natural setting and property along the Cedar River.

We're pleased you felt so warmly welcomed and enjoyed meeting you. We hope to see you again when you feel the need to get away with family and friends.

Best Wishes,

I and a colleague stayed here in May for a week. The location is very isolated but given that the only hotels in the area are Motel 8s the Red Cedar Lodge is amazing. We had to stay for a week and at the last minute had to move our trip by a day. The owners were very flexible and accommodating. The lodges are sparkling clean with beautiful hardwood floors and wonderful views! The area is secure and feels like a home away from home. The owners have been business travelers so they get it! They live on site so if you have any issues it is easy to get resolved (although we had absolutely none). Tom even came to say goodbye to us the morning we left. (Awesome reception and treatment.) The cabins have hairdryers but few hangers so beware if you have many clothes to hang. Tip: Make sure to stop at a large grocery store on the way to get whatever food you will need. Remember this is a small town and you need to come in with whatever you will need. Thanks Tom and Lorraine!!!

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us enough to write a review. Thank you for the compliments on the Red Cedar Lodge and we're happy you felt at home in your cabin!

Yes, Tom traveled 30 years and Lorraine is still traveling for business, so yes... we understand very well the "not so glamorous side of travel" and as such hope that Red Cedar Lodge can become a welcome treat for our business and recreational visitors alike.

You are right! We recently noticed we had run low on our hangers again and restocked each cabin with another bundle. Thank you... we'll keep an eye out for this. :)

If you find yourself in our area again, please try our HyVee Grocery Store as they have everything one might need to include a pharmacy and special dietary concerns. HyVee will even deliver groceries in advance of your arrival!

Best Wishes for a beautiful summer and we hope to meet again!

We stayed at the Red Cedar Lodge with our extended family for a weekend, and it was absolutely wonderful. The cabins were beautiful, clean, very welcoming, and certainly very comfortable. Each cabin had gorgeous views of the river and surrounding riverfront, and the hot tub topped off the weekend. The owners were very welcoming, as well as helpful! Our entire family would stay here again in a heartbeat! (And will!)

My husband asked me to pack my bags for our 42nd anniversary but didn't tell me where we were going. When he exited I-35 at Mason City, I couldn't understand why! We continued on toward Charles City and I was even more perplexed. The snow was very deep but every path was cleared so we had no difficulty in getting the car parked or getting to the door without feeling anxious. As he drove into the small 'resort' after dark I saw the log 'cabins' and thought "This will be a nice getaway." As we enter the cabin I was shocked! The 'cabin' was rustic luxury, and so much more than I expected, not having seen the website and arriving in the dark. I couldn't see anything but what was in view of the headlights. The "Eagle's Nest" was immaculate and breathtaking! As we walked through, every room held something that was amazing! The dining area table was our first to examine and we were in awe of the large table surrounded by windows . The kitchen was equipped with a dishwasher, everything necessary for cooking and eating and even an ice maker! The living room held the excitement of an eagle sculpture flying out of the log wall, a fireplace that warmed us while we were there and the wall facing the river was all windows with a view of the snow-covered trees in the woods, across what must have been the river. Loved the Christmas tree and especially the reading nook upstairs! Our stay was much too short and we plan to return, hopefully with family! My husband saw an advertisement in the Des Moines Register and thought it looked nice. He likes to plan our anniversary celebrations; recalled seeing their ad and looked for their website. He asked Lorraine where to order flowers and they were unique and beautiful! Thanks, Lorraine! He thought this idea was a 'home run' but after being there, he told Tom that he hit a "grand slam!" I didn't want to leave! This resort will take your breath away!

We enjoy taking part in surprises such as the "Grand Slam" your husband pulled off beautifully!
You described your journey perfectly and your delight in the cabin and its amenities thrills us. In developing the Red Cedar Lodge, we had hoped our guests would enjoy our attention to detail and as you perfectly described it all... sounds like we scored a "Home Run" with you too. :)

We also thank you for the memorable impressions you left behind in our cabin guest book. You have an artistic way with words!

The lovely eagle gracing Eagle's Nest was a gift to us and carved by a wonderful local artist, Pat Doyle from Floyd, Iowa. Pat's vision of the eagle flying through the wall is one of a kind and we are thrilled to own one of his pieces.

We're glad you enjoyed the flowers and will pass this along to Otto's Oasis.

When life gets hectic and you both need to unwind, we hope to welcome you back once again!

Happy New Year!

Tom and Lorraine

My fiance and I just returned from our stay in the "Sunrise Ridge" cabin for a weekend getaway from the city lights. The weather was not quite on our side but regardless the Winterinks accomadations were tip top! The cabin was beautiful and spacious inside and out. The living rooms huge front windows gave fantastic panoramic views of the babling Cedar river. Saturday Tom offered to take us up river so we could canoe our way down several miles to fish and take in all the wildlife. That evening we were able to spend some time warming back up at the fireside patio in the hot tub. Even before we left we agreed that we will make a tradition out of visiting the Red Cedar Lodge.

We just returned from The Red Cedar Lodge and we are already planning our trip back this summer. I can honestly say that our entire family of 6 thoroughly enjoyed every single minute!! Our "cabin" - really a beautiful log home with all the perks - was immaculate. The scenery was gorgeous. I don't remember the last time I looked forward to waking up in the morning!! :) We were 100% relaxed the minute we stepped foot there. The cabin had a Welcome Home feeling although the outdoors had a magnent pull for us to be outside. It was the perfect place to relax, regroup, and bond as a family!
