“A Surprise for Iowa”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

We have had lunch, dinners and the plated brunches here since The Class Act first opened. You MUST remember that this is a restaurant for the students in culinary arts. Sometimes you are going to get something not quite right. That being said, you will often have amazing food too. The staff try very hard to give you an exceptional dining experience in every aspect. Definitely worth a try. Great place for those special events because it's not impossible to get a last minute reservation.

“Unlike Iowa”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

This is a sophisticated Iowa gem. Rarely can you find such diversity in menu options and taste in Cedar Rapids. A little light on energy and needs some music, but the food totally compensates.

“I didn't want to write this review, but...”
Reviewed February 2, 2013

As a member of the Cedar Rapids community, I want our local eateries to do well. And that is why it hurts me to write a bad review for The Class Act.

Once upon a time, The Class Act was a little known lunch spot on campus at Kirkwood Community College. The food was served in Linn Hall in a very open area. It was a relatively cheap, elegant lunch spot. A few years ago KCC built a beautiful new hotel and The Class Act was moved to the main level of the hotel. The digs are beautiful. The food can be upscale and pricey. The value is just not there. I ordered the shrimp and lobster with risotto for $20. I was served a bowl of grayish, unappetizing risotto which was heavily salted. The shrimp were great. The small bit of lobster was overcooked.

My husband ordered the spinach salad with chicken. He specifically asked for vinegar and oil on the side. When the salad arrived it was beautifully presented and coated in dressing. He asked for the salad to be remade without the dressing. 10 minutes later the salad arrived, thrown on the plate with the chicken.

A few things to note with this restaurant:
1. All the staff are students. They are learning. Some of these kids are really trying hard to make your experience wonderful.
2. The dining room is amazing to look at. I would not sit at one of the regular tables. It appears that KCC has reused the old tables from Linn hall. The table we sat at was wobbly, which made a bad evening worse. When you are being seated, ask for a booth on the far wall or one of the taller tables on the left. For a romantic dinner, try the curtained booth near the front. There are options for large groups too.

I was glad to read reviews from other readers. Some reviewers had excellent visits. This restaurant has a lot of potential. I'm hoping that the managers of the restaurant will read this review and make changes to oversee the food a little more closely. The dishes we ordered should not have left the kitchen without being checked for accuracy and taste.

“Excellent!”
Reviewed January 26, 2013

Great food. Charcuterie plate was very good. I got the duck, which was very good (and I am a harsh critic, especially when it comes to duck). Bacon bloody better sounded much better than it actually was. Service was just acceptable. Waitress was kind enough, but she wasn't sufficiently familiar with the menu to answer any of our questions, e.g. any details about the cheeses on the charcuterie plate, the ingredients in sauces (even though they were generally on the menu, which she had taken at the point we asked), etc. Food was outstanding, ambiance was good, service was average. The average service is the only thing keeping me from giving this place five stars.

“A prairie surprise!”
Reviewed January 21, 2013 via mobile

Winter, visiting from SF Bay Area, not expecting such a good place out in the boonies, yet there it was: a smart-looking contemporary hotel with a top-notch restaurant. Food and service were excellent! Because it was college vacation time, the place was not bustling, but even then we could sense how the college hospitality and culinary programs would inform the experience here. And, we learned that Class Act is rated #1 among college-based restaurants. From the several students and staff we chatted with, the sense of pride in the place was very high. A must, when in the Eastern Iowa Airprt area (Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, et al). We'll be back!
