“...a hidden gem in Eastern Iowa”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

This was my first experience at The Hotel @ Kirkwood, and I was not disappointed. Hidden on the south side of Kirkwood Community College, just miles from the Eastern Iowa Airport, the hotel and restaurant serve another role as a working "lab and training ground" for the college's hotel/restaurant program students. They've spared no expense, the rooms are amazing, and the restaurant is top-notch. I highly recommend this property.

After reading the glowing reviews and the fact this was AAA's top rated hotel in Iowa, I was prepared for a disappointing letdown. Any trepidation was quickly laid to rest, my expectations exceeded beyond all measure. Barely three years old, the hotel's design and decor was ultra-contemporary, one could say futuristic, which in my experience is often metallic and cold. But every detail including the lobby, restaurant, and especially our guest room was tastefully done, the furnishings and color scheme in perfect balance and pleasing to the eye.

From the student staff to the complementary shuttle, the service was exceptional, but the biggest revelation was the onsite restaurant called The Class Act, a dining facility with such magnificent decor and exceptional cuisine, it would succeed in a much larger cosmopolitan city. Topping everything, however, was that this was a surprise birthday present for my wife, and in spite of the fact she's a perfectionist when it comes to decorating and cooking, even she was blown away by the hotel's impeccable presentation.

The only blemish on an otherwise perfect stay was the air in our room was quite dry (a fault seemingly universal at hotels) making for less than ideal sleeping conditions. Nevertheless, I can unequivocally say, having stayed in several lavish (and far more expensive) hotels around the world, this little boutique establishment on the campus of a small Midwestern community college was the most pleasurable and surprising stay anywhere. To those venturing to the heartland in the future and looking for a place to stay, if you are open to contemporary, dazzling decor, I cannot endorse enthusiastically enough the Hotel at Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids.

This kind of hotel you wouldn't expect to find in Cedar Rapids. The food at the restaurant is out of this world, though they need to work on music and experience. Food is truly amazing as you will find dishes that don't exist in any Iowa town. I had a beet / Gorgonzola salad with shrimp. I had a flight cancellation and the staff totally worked with me and even gave me a more fair price for an overnight stay--classic Iowa hospitality. You need to keep in mind many of the staff are students in training so you might see two extremes of service. I am nothing but happy. Second stay and I purposely sought this out first for food, second for overnight stay due to a flight cancellation.

This is very nice upscale hotel, but still a few kinks to work out. My first impression is that It is a real cool trendy place. The rooms have all the latest gadgets and high end electronic controls, but I kept running into things that didn't work, etc.

The issues I encountered with my room were:
Hall light out
Mirror light out
Sink stopper not working
The coffee was not replenished in the morning apparently because the electronic Do not disturb stuck on.
Also, Bar service so-so, not a real bar/lounge, but they have a semi staffed area where you can get drinks and hang in the a large lobby area. The chairs and tables are really cool looking, but very uncomfortable to sit in and have a conversation with the other around the table. (hard to explain)

All in all, this is a very nice modern hotel located very close to the Eastern Iowa (Cedar Rapids) airport. Hopefully your experience with the room is better than mine.

OK, Cedar Rapids is not a cold-hearted city...it is just cold in winter, especially to one from Arizona. "The Hotel" is almost perfectly positive in every way. I have never had a more professional staff from the concierge to the wait staff; everyone was not only dutifully attentive, but also somehow uniformly handsome. The room was amazing, having the most modern appointments of any room I've seen: multi-plug interface for the flat panel TV, pull out keyboard height desk for the laptop, a shower stall instead of unwieldy tub that no one uses, and an iHome! I did not get a chance to check out more of the amenities, but I'm sure they were wonderful. The restaurant has great choices on the menu and all the food was top-notch. The only downside was that they took a little long to get it to perfection...I was ready to eat my linen napkin!

We stayed at the Kirkwood over Christmas - a superb experience. Large city boutique experience in Cedar Rapids - what a pleasant surprise. Not just another hotel. Very contemporary from the first moment - the lobby, the rooms, the lounge, the restaurant. Will return at first opportunity.

Recently stayed again at the Kirkwood.

No surprises....was as excellent as ever. Very clean, well appointed rooms.

Only small disappointment was the service at breakfast. This is a community college training hotel...and my server must have been early in the training. My order and breakfast were great. No offers for Coffee refills...and didnt' check back with me at all. Did drop off my check and then disappeared. When I went to check out...the breakfast bill had not been added to my billing. The check out clerk had to call the restaurant to get it done so I had a final receipt with everything.

I'll be back again in the future......this hotel is fantastic for this area, and if your business is on the south side of town..it's very convenient.
