We took a 3 week trip to the States: 2 cities (New York and Chicago) and then a road trip along part of Route 66, up the Mississippi and back to Chicago. We booked every bit of our accommodation solely based on Tripadvisor reviews and everything was just perfect.
The Squirrel’s Nest was a very special experience. Owned by Inez and David Metzger, an artist and an architect, their wonderful house, it’s garden and its décor reflected their good taste. Right from the moment we booked this night’s stay, from our home in England, to the morning we left, we were made to feel so welcome and part of the family. Yet despite this, Inez and David were never intrusive – just managed to make us feel very welcome and very relaxed. We wish we could have stayed longer than one night! We arrived and were met by the family with great warmth – our room the Squirrel’s Nest at the very top of the house was just beautiful. Spotlessly clean and so spacious, even though there were 3 of using the room. The bedding was lovely and fresh and we even had dressing gowns and lovely touches like the homemade biscuits and a jug of lemon scented fresh filtered water. The shower room was lovely as was the smart kitchen area, the raised Jacuzzi and the very comfortable beds – but the highlight for me was the amazing view over the great Mississippi River. We were perched right at the top of the house just gazing across that great river (there’s even a telescope). Before breakfast I sat on the little terrace outside our window – it was so beautiful and peaceful. The walls of the studio are glass windows to 2 sides – so the light and view was just tremendous. However, there was another highlight to come - breakfast! Inez made THE most delicious blueberry scones (she has promised to email me the recipe) with homemade Devonshire cream. They just melted in the mouth. Loads of fresh fruit too and a colourful bunch of freshly picked flowers from her beautifully tended garden. All in all a perfect stay and I would recommend anyone to visit the Metzger household. After we left we had a quick morning in Burlington (we had to get on the road to our next destination) but this was a lovely little Mississippi port with it’s famous Snake Alley and great mid-Western architecture. We enjoyed a delicious coffee in a little café and again, lots of welcome and friendliness from the owners. A great town to visit and also only a short drive down the Mississippi to Hannibal, quaint childhood home of Mark Twain and the inspiration for Huckleberry Finn. We would definitely like to explore this area again and wish we'd had time to stay at the wonderful Squirrel's Nest longer.
