I woke up the morning of July 15th thinking about Anton Dvorak - and the tune from the Largo of his ninth symphony running through my head - more specifically, Paul Robeson’s magnificent voice singing the words to “Going Home”. Yes, boys and girls, this was the last day of Joan and Mike’s Great Adventure - the Lake Michigan Circle Tour.
Our first stop on the trip home was West Lafayette, Indiana for lunch.
In recent years the terms “XXX” and “Family”, for the most part, were never seen together. However, these two terms have been together for a long, long time in West Lafayette - and that is where we chose to have lunch.... at the XXX Family Restaurant. It has been there since 1929. The “XXX” part of their name is due to the very good draft rootbeer they serve - the brand name of which is “XXX”. The rootbeer I am told has been around since 1908.
The XXX Family restaurant has no tables, but will seat about fifty or more folks on stools along a counter which travels back and forth around a center area from where the wait staff serves you. They offer breakfast all day but we chose to have lunch. Joan had the Leroy Loin sandwich with onion rings. I had the Bert Burger which features bacon, cheese, lettuce & tomato with seasoned fries. We both drank a rootbeer. The sandwiches were good but nothing to rave about. The fries and onions rings were okay. But the rootbeer - it was excellent. By the way, there is a covered area where cars can park and get “curb service” between five and ten in the evenings. $28 for the experience (including tax and tip).
