“Lovely hotel and great golf.”
Reviewed August 2, 2012

We stayed two nights and played golf at the Donald Ross and Pete Dye courses. The hotel is beautiful, the golf courses were the most beautiful (and difficult) we've played, and the customer service was consistently excellent.

Room Tip: Be sure you're at the West Baden Hotel, and on an inside room overlooking the atrium.

My wife and I spent one Saturday night here, and really enjoyed ourselves. The hotel itself is architecturally very unusual and has been beautifully restored by the Cook family for the small sum of approx. $560 million (this according to the stables manager, who has seen the place pass from hand to hand over the years). Clearly this is a worthy historic site made that much more remarkable by its location in the middle of Indiana fields and small, and at times run down, little country towns. As you enter the property by a long, brick lined driveway, you notice a grand structure that welcomes you in all its majesty. Entering the enormous vaulted hall is quite a breath taking experience, as you feel enveloped by luxury and grandeur that are the hallmark of European grand hotels of the 20’as and 30’s. Our room was nice, although perhaps not the level of luxury that the entrance might have suggested. Views were ok, looking towards the many wooded areas. Other rooms look inward into the enormous hall. We spent the afternoon walking the grounds and hiking through a small gravel road to the stables, were riding is available. We had dinner at Sinclair’s, a high end (and expensive) restaurant in the hotel. The restaurant is also grand, very spacious, and beautifully appointed. The wine list is reasonably extensive, although the majority of choices are domestic. My wife had a superb fillet mignon and a mushroom risotto as a side (which was average), while I chose the rack of lamb, which was exceptional, and a good sautéed spinach side. We shared a bottle of Cakebread Cab Sauv and a good cheesecake. The meal came to a rather pricey $320 with tip, but was excellent (the wine alone, however, was $128). We ended the evening with an excellent Jazz trio playing fantastic standards and requests in the library from 9:00pm to midnight. The next day we had booked a couples massage at the SPA, and that’s the one let down of the whole experience. My masseuse was ok, but my wife’s was a disaster, and appeared to be completely ineffective despite the supposed 30+ years of experience. This was aggravated by an outrageous price of $300 for the two of us, which easily exceeds the prices one typically finds for top notch massage treatment in large cities. We are now waiting for the Hotel to respond to my wife’s complaint and we’ll be able to soon judge how they plan to handle this issue. Other than that, we enjoyed the experience and would recommend this as a weekend destination for anyone who is looking for grandeur and luxury in the pretty by rather non-descript Southern Indiana back-country.

Room Tip: Try and book a room looking into the grand hall

The West Baden Springs Hotel is a beautiful and unique building- the renovavtion did a good job of capturing the visctorian area spirit of the hotel while still being modernly appointed. But ytou pay for the privlege.
The lap pool is beautiful, but the outdoor pool is way too small on a nice day.
Our room was beautiful, but was booked as a "countryside" view, which in reality was a view of the parking lot. There was also a service area right next to our room and we were awakened at 7 in the morning with machine noises from this room which is okay for a Motel 8 but unacceptable for this pricey of a hotel.
Plan on eating and drinking away from the hotel- the food and drinks are priced 3 times what they are worth.
The hotel itself is beautiful and unique, good for a one night romantic getaway if you don't get stuck in the wrong room.

My husband plays vintage baseball and they have their World Series at West Baden. We have gone 4 years and look forward to it every year. We would of never thought to go there if it wasn't for the baseball weekend. It is such a beautiful, relaxing place with so much history. They have always treated us great and put a lot into trying to make this weekend special for everyone. The staff has always been very helpful, friendly and actually make you feel that they are glad you are there. The big wrap around porch is great to sit in the rockers to read, relax and of course to enjoy a waffle cone. We have had rooms on the atrium side and on the outside. They have all been very nice and we love the way they are designed to look as they would of orginally. It is just a beautiful and relaxing place to stay. We always hate to leave.

We spent 2 nights and wish it could have been more. The place is fabulous. Walking thru the atrium is an experience. The room was fantastic. We had an exterior room. The room was very clean and extremely quiet. The bed was probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. I really liked the way the main bathroom with the sink and shower was separate from the toilet facilities, made the mornings a bit smoother with 2 people. We ate at Sinclair's Cafe for breakfast both mornings. Service was great. The food was also very good. Except for the wife's eggs on the Eggs Benedict were a bit runny. The place is not cheap. We had a credit towards breakfast and that helped. Oherwise it was $35 with tip. Overall, if you're thinking of making the trip, I have no bad things to say about the place. Just go and do it.

Always enjoy coming to West Baden Springs and it provides the comfort, class and quietness I cherish. The food was superb and the hotel staff go out of their way to make you feel at home.

Room Tip: Choose a balcony room overlooking the Atrium.

Amazingly beautiful, immaculately restored, historic hotel hidden in the hills of Southern Indiana. We took a tour before it was restored and had the opportunity to stay there when we attended a World Class Driving event a couple of years ago. It is completely restored to its original splendor. We are from Southern Indiana so really enjoyed watching all the Europeans who had come for the event walk around with their mouths open!! They could not believe that something like this could exist in American much less just outside the Southern Indiana corn fields. Even the spa is oppulent! Amazing dining! I just can't say enough. Step back in time and treat yourself to this hotel!! We go back again when we can for special occasions.

Room Tip: I don't this there is bad one although if you are there for an event, one that overlooks the atr...
