West Baden Springs Hotel

Driving into the grounds through the sign indicating West Baden Spring Hotel, Carlsbad of America you are greeted by the beautiful grounds surrounding this lovely old hotel. The large veranda has rocking chairs to watch the day go by. The valet has been moved to the back of the hotel, so upon exiting your car you walk through the amazing open atrium, courtyard that was the largest in the world until the Astrodome in Houston was built. The quiet soft light seems to drift down upon an otherworldly place. There are a few pieces of furniture placed in this huge space, but the mosaic tiles are amazing and so colorful. The entire building is curved and the craftmanship is lovely. Upon checking in we asked if they had our "Preferred Hotel" number and the front desk staff was unaware what this was? Odd..they assigned us a room looking out at the rotunda, but I prefer trees to watching people so we asked for a room on the outside. The room was large, the grounds are so beautiful, they offer tours and tea on the weekends. They have stables and a spa. This hotel has quite a fascinating history and I won't spoil it, but once it sold for $1! I did have an excellent nights sleep in this lovely spot..and that is what hotels are for!

Room Tip: Chose a room looking over the gardens for a quite nights sleep. Be sure they have your member number...

My wife treated us to a couple of days in the West Baden Springs Hotel for my birthday this year. Although located in a small town in south-central Indiana, the ambiance of this beautifully restored hotel quickly brings to mind elegant hotels in Italy or France. The architecture of the hotel is just amazing, particularly the large atrium. We had a very spacious king-bed room looking out into the atrium. The bathroom was outstanding with excellent amenities. We ordered an outstanding breakfast from room service, which was delivered everything promptly and with a real flair. We had dinner in Sinclair's, where we had somewhat mixed responses. As is true throughout the hotel, this dining room is stylish and elegant. Our food was very good and the service was satisfactory; although neither seemed to be outstanding. Unfortunately, Sinclair's does not have a dress code, so were seated next to a table with a couple wearing jeans and tee-shirts, which was disappointing to us. Yes, we understand that this is a "resort" hotel, but really . . .

Room Tip: We thought that having a room which overlooked the atrium was quite nice.

The only reason I give it a "very good" rating is b/c of the architecture...and to rate it as "average" wouldn't be fair. It really is worth seeing. I happened upon the hotel one night in preparation for a family trip to Indiana. I had to see why something that looks like it should be in Europe is in the middle of no where Indiana. The answer is that West Baden / French Lick is actually fairly centrally located to Indy, St. Louis, Nashville, Louisville, etc., and they have made it something of a casino and corporate retreat mecca.

I like the hotel. The biggest issue is that there is basically nothing going on here. Local attractions include a well known waterpark, Lincoln's boy hood home, Santa Claus IN, etc., all clustered together about an hour away.

I'm glad I came but I'll probably never be back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the atrium.

The outstanding West Baden Springs Hotel in West Baden Springs, Indiana was once dubbed "The Eighth Wonder of the World." I was on a group coach trip up to Mackinac Island in June 2012 and we had a mystery overnight stop here on our way home. What a wonderful surprise! As soon as we approached the hotel's entrance arch we knew that we were in for a special treat. The hotel and grounds are awesome. Our lavish room was huge and simply gorgeous. Our three sets of french doors looked out on to the magnificent 6-story atrium. Our king sized bed was beautifully appointed and quite comfortable. I hated to remove the lucious pillows and satiny bedspread. The well-equipped bathroom was four times the size of my master bath at home and held lovely ammenities. Service and meals were supurb also. We made time to swim in the warm indoor pool and hot tub and also in the surprisingly warm outdoor pool. We shopped at the several unique boutiques.

There is complementary shuttle service to the nearby sister property, The French Lick Resort. This charming property has over 5,000 square feet of gold leafing and other outstanding ornamental features to exdplore. We visited the casino at the French Lick and our party all won small amounts of money there. The staff took time to explain the various slot machine games to us and we each received a free tee shirt for playing with their $5 voucher. We played in the non-smoking area. My husband was quite pleased with the quality of his meal in the casino. It was more than he could eat.

Plan to spend more time than we had at the sophisticated West Baden Springs Resort. Take one of the daily Historical Walking Tour with a tour guide. Costumed Characters representing famous guest convey the history of the hotel on a twilight tour. There is a fee for the tours which last over an hour. Listen to live jazz singing every Saturday in the Ballard's Bar. A harpist entertains in the Atrium every Saturday too. If you visit on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, stop in at the Late Night Jazz Club in the ornate Caddy Sinclaire Room for easy listening music.

Outdoor activities include bike ridiing.carriage rides, power walks, walking and hiking trails horseback riding (pony rides also) and golf. There are also train rides that I wish that I had time to investigate. I hope that you will be able to do so. There is also a lovely Spa (we received a 10% off couon.)

I highly recommend this hotel to everyone but especially to honeymooon couples, those celebrating a special event and all who appreciate luxury, extravagance and beauty. In our welcome packet we received a $50 room discount at the French Lick to use on our next trip. If I didn't live so far away, I would definitely use it. I will never forget my stay here.

Room Tip: Be sure to use the robes in the room., Theyu are luxuorious.

This hotel resort exceeded my expectations. The room was big, the amenties in the rooms were extensive, the wife loved the bath salts and soaps. Seperate tub and shower. The bed was very comfortable. The most beautiful part of the hotel was the 200 ft. diameter round atrium that rose 110 ft to the ceiling. Decorated in early Greco style, it had marble walls!
The service was superb, the entire staff was engaging and accommadating. We drove the 1 mile to the French Lick Resort to gamble at the casino, and even brought home some extra cash.
I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a getaway place to relax and be spoiled

Room Tip: Stay in a room overlooking the gigantic atrium
