“Fabulous Resort”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

I grew up in French Lick, and hadn't been back to visit in 20 years. My husband and I recently stayed in the West Baden Hotel and it was fabulous! Amazingly beautiful, delicious food, professional staff - and the spa was heavenly! We are now planning to return each year to celebrate the incredible restoration of this magnificent resort. We couldn't have been more pleased.

I am a frequent traveler and have stayed in many beautiful hotels. This one would have to be in my top five favorites!

This hotel is a classic of a bygone era but total restoration still seems to be a work in progress. First, the domed atrium is beautiful and huge. It's one of the main draws and it is nice to just relax in and stare up at the ceiling. The interior of the property is very well maintained. There are lots of rocking chairs on the verandas to help you enjoy the peaceful surroundings. However, the grounds were underwhelming. They are large, but the landscaping is nothing special and there's not much in the way of flowers or interesting plants. It looks like they are still working on some of the buildings in the garden areas.

The room had very nice classic and interesting furniture and a large flat screen TV. Our room was also one of the most sound-proofed hotel rooms that I've ever stayed in. I really didn't hear the other guests (and the hotel was pretty much sold out) and no doors opening and closing down the hall. Our room was near the elevator but we didn't hear that either.

There are not as many dining options as you would expect for such a large hotel. We ate dinner at Sinclairs and I found it to be decent but significantly overpriced. I had the lamb which was tasty but had significant amounts of non-edible tendons and fat. My wife returned her Red Snapper and was able to substitute for another dish (she also got the lamb) and they gave us a free desert - the Banana Foster made tableside by the host. We had lunch at Bannisters in the atrium and found them to have good pub style food.

My wife enjoyed the spa but found the manicure and pedicures to be quite expensive. The indoor pool area looked nice but we didn't have a chance to swim.

There's not a lot to do in the area other than play golf or go to the spa. So this is definitely more of a relaxation stop. I'm glad I experienced it but don't really feel the need to return.

i stayed here for a getaway weekend and was totally impressed with this magnificent hotel. I have traveled the world and this hotel is definitely among the most beautiful. As mentioned in other reviews, it is truly like stepping back in time with the luxury of the Gilden Age with modern amenities and the true surprise is that it is in small town Indiana. I enjoyed the first class spa services and the casino. There are lots of activities both indoor and outdoors. My only comment is that the front desk could take more initiative and explain the layout and the shutle services that take you around the different properties as they seemed to assume that these are known- I had to ask a lot of questions to get basic information. The atrium is spectacular and they had live music (harpist and piano) to make this place a hotel where you can truly get relaxed and refreshed.

Room Tip: The atrium view room gave a great perspective. Large room well furnished.

I stayed at the West Baden Springs Hotel in southern Indiana again, and will be back for a conference for another entity next week. The building is stunning, rooms are spacious and sumptiously appointed, the restaurants excellent.

Room Tip: The choices are on the atrium, which is spectacular, or around the outside, which has the advantage...

My husband and I went to West Baden for our first anniversary. We purchased the In the Mood for Love package. It included a couples' aromatherapy massage, $100 toward dinner at Sinclair's Ristorante, and a one night stay in a king room. We had an absolutely wonderful time. The spa is beautiful and luxurious. The massage was great. Everything we ate was delicious. The dinner we had at Sinclair's was one of the best meals we have ever eaten. If you're celebrating something special, I would definitely recommend West Baden (as it is a bit pricey, but completely worth it!).

Room Tip: We stayed in an exterior room. The view was somewhat obscured by trees, but otherwise very nice. Hav...

Staff was friendly and courteous. Shuttle is an excellent way to travel around the resort, parked the car on Friday and did not need it until we left on Sunday. Internet access without charge is a nice touch--too many upscale hotels are charging outrageous fees for the service to increase their profits. It is very relaxing to lounge in the central atrium with a book.
Food in Sinclairs is a bit pricey, but very well prepared. The wait staff were very friendly in spite of being over worked. Only negative comment is the many tables left with dirty dishes after guests left due to dining management failing to have tables bussed in a timely fashion.
Being off the beaten path is part of the charm. I would add a couple of lounge chairs in the dome since they were always filled. We shall certainly return again.

If you're a fan of the Broadmoor, Greenbrier, Homestead or Pinehurst, you'd better look here for even more. While the resort website is confusing, the bottom line is that there are two hotels under the same resort umbrella. The West Baden gives you the classic elegance of the Broadmoor with Donald Ross golf and Pete Dye (Whistling Straits style not railroad ties). The French Lick shares the Ross Course and has a great nine family course that is still 3,400 yrds from the tips. The French Lick is more like the Greenbrier with a casino and a greater energy level although only a mile shuttle or walk from the West Baden. Pick the atmosphere you prefer without missing the experiences of either hotel. Fishermen and boaters, a 9,000 acre lake is ten miles south with the cheapest boat rental rate ever. Want to do the Derby? Stay here for the same price at a Motel 6 in Louisville on Derby weekend. Keep the young kids entertained? Indoor water park a mile away for winter and Holiday World an hour away is one of the cleanest, nicest amusement & water parks around.

Room Tip: West Baden much quieter hotel than French Lick. The rooms vary in size and layout due to the restor...
