“Third year in a row; still stunning!”
Reviewed June 22, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

And again...what brilliant new descriptions can I really add to all the high praise given in the raving reviews of this very special studio at Cas Abou? Well, none. So I'll just write down what we tell family and friends in Holland when trying to explain why we love this place so much.

The studio is small but well equipped, very clean and nicely decorated. But that isn't why we want to come back here each time; it's the location!

The big terrace of the studio - where we spend a great deal of our time - is right at a beautiful azure blue bay. And every day mother nature surprises us here with small presents. It could be a troupial waking us up early in the morning singing "La Cucaracha". Or a manta ray gracefully passing by. A pod of dolphins hunting right in front of us. A glittering emerald hummingbird hoovering around our heads. Of course, the grand finale - the golden/orange/purple sunset! And, as a 'encore', when its pitch dark a school of bioluminescent creatures can turn the water into a star-spangled sea.
That's why this is our perfect holiday spot!

At Cas Abou we have access to the internet, but we don't need it for entertainment. Just put some crumbs of toast on the wooden sculptures on the terrace and the show can begin; within minutes around ten different kinds of birds will present itself. We watch this spectacle in the morning while having breakfast or in the early evening with a chilled wine or a nice cold beer

Don Newton, the owner of the place, and his partner Brigitte are doing their utmost at making us feel welcome and at home. Don is an enthusiastic host and (justly) very proud of this studio and of the island. He is always giving useful tips about what places you should visit, what things to do or where to eat.

And there are a lot of things you can do on Curacao: explore all the small beaches, rent a kayak at Cas Abou Beach, climb mount Christoffel or go snorkeling (just in front of the cottage) or diving. Visit Willemstad- for shopping, but also for the Kura Hulanda and the colorful architecture of Scharloo and Pietermaai. Or check out Mambo Beach - and realise again why you chose tranquil Cas Abou as the spot for your holiday!
And as for dining out; in Band Abou we love the new Williwood and, our all time favourite, Triopenotti.

Don & Brigitte, thanks for sharing this wonderful place with us and hope to see you again sometime at "our" Cas Abou!

“Absolutely amazing”
Reviewed June 7, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Wake up to the song of the troupials, go to sleep to the sound of the waves, in between be as active or as relaxed as you want to be. The choice is yours. This little house sits on the edge of a very laid back neighborhood and has everything you need to make it your own personal retreat. From the large deck you can nature watch in comfort. From it I saw over 30 species of land, sea and air creatures including: the manta, a large dolphin pod, sea turtle, pelicans, iguanas, hummingbirds, geckos, saffron finches, trupials...I could go on and on. This doesn't include the mass amounts of underwater life you will see while snorkeling. No need to travel to one of the many amazing, close by, beaches, it's all right there in front of you.

If you want an extra treat add a massage by Anouk. She has amazing hands. An open air massage on the deck of your amazing cottage - how relaxing is that??

Let's talk a little more about the snorkeling for a minute. Get in the water right in front of the cottage - boom, you are seeing all kinds of fish. Snorkel to the left a very short distance and you have large boulders that provide great viewing. Snorkel straight out and you are quickly where the shelf begins to drop off; the fish get larger but the water is so incredibly clear that visibility is not an issue. Go to the right from the cottage, following the path the manta likes to take, to the other side of the neighborhood and you will find yourself in an alternate universe of elk horn coral where you will see an unbelievable array of sea life. When you are done, snorkel back to the cottage and get out. Go up a few stairs and rinse yourself and your gear off in the outdoor shower...a few more, steps and you are on the deck, drying off under the sun, enjoying the trade winds and drinking a beer while reflecting on your luck in finding this amazing place.

Don takes great care to ensure the cottage has all the features you need to feel at home. His attention to detail in decor and landscaping is incredible. The outdoor shower alone is a work of art. Don provides an array of outdoor seating locations and furniture - arrange them to suit your needs! He is also a great source of information whether you want to live like a local or take in all the tourism the island has to offer. Ask him questions and listen to his recommendations. You will not be sorry.

We will be back...oh yes, we will be back.

Hi J&M! M, Congrats on the first time massage! Who-hoo! Anouk is pure magic! What fun it was to enjoy some time chatting and sharing some explorations with you both! Nice to share those cold beers, too! It's always real fun for me to stop by to see how the guests are doing and it turns out to be...absolutely...nothing! What's on the schedule today? Nothing. Where are you going? No place, we are staying here. I love that! That's the best way to a pure holiday. You don't need to go anywhere when you are at Casa Ba-ooo! Loved hearing your nature updates and that you saw both the manta and the dolphin pods! Amazing! Next time you have to see the flamingos, sea eagles and the wild pigs. That's our neighborhood mascot! All the best and looking very forward to bouncing down some back roads with you! Great that you tried out so many local spots for eats! Don and the Seaside Team

As a local I like to stay at different vacation rentals to "getaway"once in a while. This also allows me to review hotels/apartments/b&b's for friends visiting from abroad. Casa Ba-oo was perfect! Excellent on the water location with breath taking scenery. Super quiet and relaxing :)

Oh, man, that manta...he's been in front of the cottage for about a month now, a beautiful month. So glad you and the family had a chance to get away from it all and enjoy being on the seaside and exploring Banda Abou! Real nice you got to meet Carl and Caroline, they are Banda Abou treasures. Also, very glad you had a great meal with our chef, Lisa. Along with our massage master, they are the number 1 and 2 service requests for adding to the pleasure of being on the seaside! Looking very forward to welcoming everybody back! Don

Chicago! I hope you enjoyed that video of the neighborhood manta I sent you! Just upgraded the furniture in the cottage, too, so expect some more recent shots. The views and chill haven't changed, still the best on the island. Next time we hope you can enjoy some massages on the terrace over that blue-blue water and some private chef service for sunset. Looking forward to welcoming you back, think about the North Sea Jazz Festival! It was real fun to chat with you both! Don

“On the water, awesome sunsets”
Reviewed March 28, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

You can spit in the water from the deck and have a clear view of every sunset. I could stop here, but I will add a few more thoughts. Facing west with the prevailing wind from the east, means that the water is calm and clear and excellent snorkeling is steps from the door. There are some boulders to navigate to swim off the steps. A short walk to the beach off to the left is much easier to get in the water with snorkeling gear. We found masks and snorkels in the cottage plus one pair of fins. We bought a second pair and left them.

Banda Abou is on the rustic side of the island. If you want a fancy resort, go to the east end (or to Aruba). If you want secluded beaches, great snorkeling and great informal dining with the locals, this is the place for you.

Dinner by Lisa was the climax of our week. We also ordered Dushi Picnic. Both were awesome and plentiful (therefore leftovers). Dinner at Williwood was another highlight (Lisa’s husband (Olov) is chef four nights a week). We enjoyed El Lanternu as well. We missed Trio Penotti (closed Monday). Sunset at Karakter was nice. However, dinner with Lisa was same sunset, better food and no driving.

Being on the leeward side of the island, the wind swirls around and comes and goes. When it dies, there are a lot of bugs. Pesky gnats, especially around food. No-see-ums are at their worst at sunset and sunrise but still active all night. I had more bites than any other trip. Only about half of the window panes opened and the ceiling fan hummed loudly on any speed but low. These things are fixable and therefore reduce my rating to 4 stars. With insufficient airflow to chase the bugs and to cool the afternoon sun, we resorted to keeping closed up and using the AC from dusk to dawn. Fix the windows, quiet the fan, maybe add a breeze box or two and we would never need the AC and we could listen to the waves all night.

Playa Cas Abou was the only beach we visited. Most beaches in the area are either rocky, hard to access, or both. Cas Abou Beach is convenient, sandy and has facilities. Get there by 10:00 for a hut for shade.

California Market almost as well stocked as any supermarket. The Chinese markets (we saw three on the way from the airport) are better stocked than 7-11. So grab a beverage and snack at a market and head straight to the cottage. Check out what is already there (butter, condiments, spices, cooler, etc.), find a grocery bag or two and then go to California Market to stock up.

Nice sound bridge at the cottage. Connected my phone via Bluetooth and non-stop tunes. Outdoor shower is great. Good WiFi and spotty cell phone coverage. Be as engaged, or disengaged, with home as you like.

Sailing to Klein Curacao was a long day. Leave the cottage at 6am. Two hours of motoring in rolling waves upwind to get there. Snorkeling okay. Great crew, great food, open bar. Return to dock at 5pm and home at 6pm.

Hi Dave, Thanks for taking the time with your review and comments. Real glad you enjoyed being seaside with easy access to world class snorkeling. If I had know the fan was loud when you were visiting then I could have sprayed it with WD-40 while you were at beach and all would have been taken care of directly. But, fortunately the current guests are enjoying the quiet fan thanks to your comments, it' appreciated. Right again about the window louvres, first time I've heard a comment about that and a repair is scheduled to take a look next week and hopefully get everything squared away directly. We always appreciated knowing these things so we can take action directly. Chef Lisa is an integral part of the team and we're super glad you enjoyed her delicious chef service and picnic basket! I hope you were able to use the mosquito net over the bed so you could be comfortable at night. While the wind usually blows any bugs away when the wind stops around sunrise and sunset that's when you need to close the doors, as we advise all of our guests. Sure, sounded like you had a nice time exploring, real glad you enjoyed your time on the seaside! Don and the Seaside Team

“Best place on the island”
Reviewed March 23, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Wake to the sound of the ocean. Coffee and yoga on the deck over the blue water. Watch the birds.. Swim and snorkel right out the door. Read, relax, nap. Time for another swim and snorkel. Take a shower outdoors, overlooking the ocean. Sunset, cocktails, dinner.. Sit on the deck and look at the endless night sky with the stars you never see at home. Fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. Repeat . What could be better? Cas-aboo is a gem. It's the best place on the island. If you are going to Curaçao and you want the beauty of he ocean in perfect comfort, stay there.
