The Dreamer Hostel On The Beach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 10, 2014

We had Dreamer in Santa Marta recommended by several travelers we met and we thought this was gonna be similar.

Don't only base your opinion on our review, because at times a person's experience is good/bad because of the type of other travelers and/or moods of staff.

Some pro's: cool hang-out places (hammocks, cushions, swimming pool etc.) fantastic food (get the prawns they are unbelievable), fresh mango falling off the trees, roughly 100 meters away from the beach.

Definitely a party hostel when we were there, it unfortunately attracted really young crowds (teenage Americans who were tourist with money as opposed to travellers) who constantly felt the need to talk and be friends with everyone, making the weirdest comments to not have 'awkward' silences, whilst we were happy with reading a book and sun bake. Music blearing all day & night, people screaming.

This location also doesn't have a kitchen, the food from the restaurant there was good though! And not too pricey. But if you miss 'meal time' there are no options for you to have a meal other than going to the main street.

Bathroom in dorm room didn't lock, which caused for some awkward walk-in moments, shower and beds were fine. The dorm room (Chile) was spacious so you could easily put your bags next to your bed without the room looking messy. It's cleaned daily and your bed is made too.

You have to pay for wifi at the Palomino location (might be a good thing to know up front). And for Palomino in general: make sure you have gone to the ATM before you get there.

Even though we had an average experience, we went to Dreamer hostel in Santa Marta which was way better and we loved it there!

As I said, not the worst hostel but they need to be clear who they are catering to.

Firstly, the positive. The rooms here are gorgeous - really big, high ceilings, a terrace overlooking the pool and a comfy bed. However, this comes at a premium and at the prices charged, this is not really a hostel. But it's not really a hotel either. I guess for some of the many monied american teenagers playing pool, watching NBA whilst listening to loud rap music and sipping overpriced cocktails at the bar all night, perhaps this is their idea of hostel life and travelling. But it's not mine. If you are on a real traveler's budget and want to experience something a bit different to Cancun spring break, then walk along the beach and stay in one of the cabanas.

We stayed in a 8 beds dorm. The room is big enough for 8. there is no aircon but fans and it was clean. That's true, the hostel is not on the beach but only 50 meters!
The staff is nice and there is a nice atmosphere here. We ate here 3 times and the food is really good. Breakfast is buffet.
Palomino is quiet and the dreamer hostel is a relaxing place.

The quality of the room keeps me from being able to give one star, though the misleading name of this place makes me want to change my mind about that. "The Dreamer Hostel On The Beach" is not on the beach. It's set back from the beach and there are no beach amenities. If you fall for this, as I did, you'll make your way out to the beach via a tiny trail cut between properties and look at dismay at the surrounding resorts' nice hammocks and beach tables, while you're stuck with The Dreamer OFF The Beach.

The room was beautiful and clean. I will give the place that much.

Everything else needs major improvement. A gross pool filled with drunk, obnoxious backpacker-types; an indifferent bar also constantly full of drunk, yapping backpackers; useless "wifi" that is really just someone's phone sharing a data connection making it impossible to connect at all; a long, long wait for coffee in the morning (seriously, there was a line of people just trying to get coffee as a kitchen worker waited and waited and waited some more for a pot to boil so she could dole out more tiny cups of coffee and get the mob of people off her back - very bad planning); and a general mood of "gotcha." As others have noted, there is a reason this place takes your money up front - it's because you will soon see there are better, cheaper places to stay just next door, but you are stuck because you already gave The Dreamer your money. I'm an experienced traveler and I can take a lot of inconveniences, but this place was just a total rip off designed to deceive.

After writing that, I changed my mind. One star it is. They have a nice property, but use deceptive marketing and clearly don't care about the visitors, just their cash.

The room was actually beautiful and very clean, but it didn't make up for all the negatives. The location itself isn't "bad" but the owners need to be honest about their property not actually being "On The Beach" as they describe. They also need to decide if they want to be a nice resort for the amount they charge, or a backpacker hostel, because when I pay for a nice resort I do not expect to be barraged by gross partiers, drunk at all hours, making tons of noise and basically taking the place over. As a hostel, it's probably great. As a resort, really bad.

Dear traveller,

Firstly we want to thank you for your feedback about the Dreamer hostel on the beach. We apologize that your expectations have not been satisfied. Our Hostel is one of the reference hostels in the area; doing our best to keep high quality standards

With regards to our location we do are on the beach as the hostel has its own private access to it, right at the end of the garden, 1 minute walking from the recepcion, charge the accommodation at the check is very common in many hostel worldwide, Im sorry if you felt bad for for it, Our hostel is famous to be always chill and relaxing as the spirit of Palomino is, but the day you were there we were celebrating the worldcup at the bar, people that didnt want to participate had a lot of space at their disposal with our 4.000 mtr of tropical gardens, also the rooms are designed to be far from the bar so are always very quite!

I took good note of your feedback and I would like to impress you in your next visit, our objective is to take care of our guests. Please, don't hesitate to contact me directly for any future reservation

I booked a couple of nights and end up staying for a week more, it was such the perfect spot! The food was delicious, all the staff were super friendly, every little corner was clean and the garden was beautiful. Our room was huge and fresh. The beach could be a little bit row some days but just 20 minutes away you can find a calm and nice river to swim.

The place is cozy, clean, staff is incredible helpful with tons of information about activities to do (don't miss the tubing, was a blast!). They have a volleyball field that is perfect to meet new people and prepare a little gang for the night. Cocktails at happy hour are really good, try the caipirinhas. Can't wait to come back!

The dreamer is a nice place located in Palomino beach and offering a nice set up, unluckily we had no chance to overnight but we could not lose an aperitif time at the bar. Nice, cozy and simple, definitely a great place to hang out for lunch and dinner.
