I rented a two bedroom lofted suite with a gas fireplace for $159. The suite was very nice, large and comfortable. I was not disappointed with the value at all. My only complaint is it was chilly and we couldn't find the thermostate anyplace in the unit. And there was a coffee maker but no coffee to make. A small single cup keurig would be better with some k cups -- that would have been great. The gas fireplace was fabulous. Pay per view movies were expensive. And the included breakfast was ok but the paper plates were cheesy. Is it really too much trouble to let us use real plates and real mugs? Paper products are not eco friendly and really tacky!

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Residence Inn. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The room was a suite arrangement, which was not necessary for the two of us who were visiting family, but would be great for a family or group of people. We were on the first floor, and as I had read on TripAdvisor, we could hear the people above us walking around in thier room - not what you would expect in a hotel. Aslo, we were near the pool/basketball court, so we heard the kids playing outside late into the night. We solved this problem by turning the AC fan to "on", creating enough white noise to cover everything else. The breakfast was buffet-style of the usual breakfast foods, but it was tasty. Location felt very safe and was convenient for our needs, and we parked our car and walked along the river paths to get downtown as well as to Notre Dame campus.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second/top floor.

Great stay for the business traveler. Nice Residence Inn, but could use some minor freshening up. Staff was excellent, breakfast in the morning (complimentary) was okay, free WIFI, pool onsite, basketball court onsite, pool table, foosball, large entertainment center in main building, staff was friendly, close to U of Notre Dame.

Rooms were nice but a little dated, but you couldn't beat the rate (paid $129/night). Would definitely stay again.

We stayed here for the weekend with an amateur hockey team. The hotel was 10 minutes from Notre Dame campus. The staff was very accomidating when our team made it to the championship game at 4:00 on Monday and gave us a free late check out. Free hot breakfast in the morning. Lots of restaurants and stores close by. Rooms were clean. I would stay here again.

I have returned to this hotel several times and always come away impressed with the staff at all levels. The Residence Inn is starting to show its age but short of a complete rehab, there is little to offer for improvement inasmuch as they keep the place tip top! I'll return.

Room Tip: 1st floor gets you lots of noise from above flloor

Three of us (my wife, her brother, and I) stayed here, as we were in South Bend for two nights of Notre Dame hockey games. We had a two-bedroom, two-bath "penthouse."

The good news: the rooms are spacious, and the bedrooms are split on two floors with a loft above for the second bedroom and bath. The grounds were reasonably quiet, and the breakfast (provided with the room fare) was typical of the "free with your room" hotel variety. Having a full kitchen was also great for kicking back after the games, and having drinks and snacks.

The bad: room maintenance was inconsistent. While the bathrooms were clean, and the floors vacuumed, other touches were lacking. The return vent for the A/C hadn't been cleaned or dusted probably since the Carter administration. The garbage disposal in the kitchen emanated an odd, slightly foul smell. The desk light lacked a lightbulb. Only one of the bedrooms had a luggage rack on which to place your bags. Finally, when we returned from a day of visiting South Bend, our room had not been cleaned--and it was past 4PM. We surmised that, perhaps, since this was an extended stay hotel, that we had erred in expecting it to be serviced. Around 5pm two housekeeping people showed up (we did not ask them to), and offered to provide fresh towels and soap, which we accepted. They were clearly not there, however to clean or service the room beyond that (since they had no vacuum or utility cart to do so). Lastly, the exterior of the hotel units (a series of townhouses spread across the property), shows some serious signs of wear.

So, on one hand, these are not fatal flaws, and for the most part, did not detract from an enjoyable experience. They certainly prevent it from getting five (or even four) stars in my ratings, however.

A few other comments: if you opt for one of the penthouse units, you will need to climb stairs. All such rooms are on the second floor of the "townhouses" (as I call them), and no elevators exist. Moreover, the two bedrooms do lack some privacy. The first floor bedroom is part of--and open to--the general living room area. The upstairs bedroom is a loft open to the first floor below. This is a slightly different configuration from other two-bedroom Residence Inns we've stayed at before. Additionally, if you are visiting South Bend for any campus activities, you will not be close enough to walk to them; you will need to drive to and from. A similar comment should be made for dining options. Again, you'll need to drive anywhere to dine out.

Room Tip: If you have several bags, avoid building 1 as it's a longer walk to/from the rooms.

After spending plenty of time at the downtown Marriott on Joseph st, I needed a place where I could cook more meals while in S. Bend. I also wanted to save some money. While I enjoyed having a kitchen, here are some of the pros and cons to staying at the Residence Inn.

Pros: Free internet. Free Breakfast. Better temperature control. More family feel. Ability to cook food yourself. Couch with pullout means that you can fit more people if you have guests. More family type activities and nature nearby. The rooms are very large with a kitchen sink, microwave, stove top burners, refrigerator/freezer, and provides cooking pans, utensils, and basic cooking items. Nature rich setting with birds and places that are scenic for walking.

Cons: Much louder because it is cheaper for families. So many kids running around that I asked for another building because being near the basketball court sucked for me as I was trying to get work done, and not on vacation. The housekeeping only comes in every 2-3 days on a long stay. That was unexpected, but once you have the schedule and know what to expect, it isn't bad. My trash overflowed a few times and I had to take it to the dumpster myself. If there is a holiday, it will be even longer until housekeeping will come to clean the room. The television is quite old and sometimes very blurry with bad signal in some of the rooms.

Room Tip: If you have a family, stay in a building near the basketball courts or pool, near the breakfast and...
