“You can't help but relax!”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

I'd like to echo the comments of a previous reviewer who enjoyed a familial "girlfriends weekend" in the Oliver Inn's carriage house accommodation. This space was absolutely perfect for our needs as well!

My mother, two sisters and I took full advantage of this cozily decorated living room by catching up late into Friday night, plopped on the comfy sofa and assisted by our friends "wine" and "cheese." It was easy to relax, given utter lack of ambient noise, the security of being able to stretch out as much as we wanted, and the calming, autumn colors Alice and Tom used to decorate the room.

On Saturday, due to weather unsupportive of our plans for an afternoon in plen air, we opted to gather around the spacious island in the carriage house's kitchen with our our canvases propped on wine bottles. There we deployed our slightly altered plan for the weekend, which was to "paint," with varying levels of skill, still lifes of an arrangement of fruit and veggies that we'd bought earlier in the day at the fabulous (and recommended to you) South Bend Farmer's Market. Let's just say, none of us is planning to change careers!

Another experience of note: you haven't lived until you've had breakfast by candlelight - accompanied by Alice's yummy baked goods and Tom's soothing service at the Queen Ann dining room table with the lace tablecloth and the "live" piano music...well let's just say, none of us confused it with our breakfasts at home!

As we were packing our cars to depart, we agreed that we'd just enjoyed a very special experience; I only wish everyone could spend a laid-back weekend at the Oliver Inn - this world would surely be a calmer, better-fed place!

Room Tip: The carriage house is ideal for four or so people who'd like a little more privacy and some time...

My husband and I frequently stay in high end B&B's, and we loved this property. What made it extra special was the hospitality of the wonderful innkeepers. We also liked South Bend very much. It was a great stop on our way to the Ryder Cup event in Chicago.

My 2 sisters and mother rented the Carriage House at Oliver Inn for a girl's weekend. It was perfect. There is a full kitchen, living room, porch, and 2 good-sized bedrooms. There are also 2 full bathrooms, though only one has a stall shower. The decor matches the cozy hominess of the wood floors and real plaster walls. The beds were very comfortable, with crisp clean linens and lots of pillows. Super soft bath robes are included, too. We enjoyed the homemade cookies that Alice left for us upon arrival. Breakfast was served in the main house, just a few steps across the parking area. Very fancy, tasty hot breakfast. We loved the china place-settings, the candle-light, and Mr. O'Toole at the piano. Tom and Alice were lovely hosts. The only caution about the carriage house: the stairs are very steep and there's no elevator. Just be aware. One more thing...the lighting in the living room is CFL, not the best for reading.

Room Tip: The Carriage House is great for a small group. You can hang out in the living room, or around the i...

This was our third visit to the Oliver Inn. It is a beautiful historic mansion with lovely manicured grounds. For this visit we stayed in the Clem Studebaker room. The room was comfortable, spacious and beautifully decorated. There was a fireplace and one of the best beds we ever slept in!

Alice prepared delicious gourmet breakfasts and graciously accommodated my dietary needs.
We have stayed at many bed and breakfast's but never met such wonderful owners. Alice and Tom are exceptional hosts displaying a warm hospitality that made us feel so welcome. They truly did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable and memorable. We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Oliver Inn and highly recommend it.

Perfect place to stay while taking our daughter to Notre Dame! Tom & Alice were so helpful in making our stay comfortable and relaxing during this "transition" time for our family. We will definitely stay again for other visits. The breakfasts were amazing and we loved the pantry with cookies!

We delivered our daughter to Notre Dame in August and we were looking for something other than an antiseptic hotel chain for our stay. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. The inn is large and charming with lovely grounds and interior. It also has an interesting history. Tom and Alice were genuine, generous and obviously good with people. The breakfasts were amazing and we met a number of very nice people. We were in the Knute Rockne room which is large and has a small balcony where we sat and enjoyed the soft evenings. Our daughter immediately decided to move into the dorm so we eased the empty nest syndrome by going to an Irish bar (Fiddler's Hearth). It was close to the Inn with good live music and beer. I'm surprised the University doesn't promote the Inn as a place to stay since it has so much charm, is family owned and only about ten minutes from campus. In any event, a terrific place with very nice owners.

Room Tip: Knute Rockne room was big with a large bathroom that had a big tub (clawfoot I think) and separate l...

My husband and I were searching for a half-way point between Indianapolis, Indiana and Muskegon, Michigan, and decided on The Oliver Inn. The Inn is located in downtown South Bend in a residential area just west of the downtown district. It was within easy walking distance to some great restaurants (Cafe Navarro) and there was ample off-street parking for our vehicle.
We were warmly greeted by the innkeepers and were given great advice on area restaurants.
The room was very large (Knute Rockne Room) and the bathroom was updated with little historical remaining touches. The Inn is a solid choice as an alternative from a hotel stay. The only reason I am giving it a very good rating rather than an excellent rating is due to the breakfast. It was served buffet-style and the dishes were not covered. I am not a germophobe, but it was a little unsettling as they had a full house and I just did not like it that the food was not covered to protect from coughs, etc. Having said this, it was a great night's sleep in a beautiful room, with great innkeepers who are very nice and helpful. It is worth trying out.
