Jean runs a tight ship, but food is always great. She has numerous choices and the plate is full. You never go home hungry, Good value for the price. Nothing fancy.

My friend and I went there solely on it's #1 position on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed.
As others have me turned, Jean, the owner, sat down and told us about the menu, a little about her background, asked if there were any food allergies, and left us to try and decide what to eat. This is a neighborhood restaurant, nothing fancy or pretentious, no starched tablecloths, just great Chinese Food, with some Cantonese items on the menu. We both had the Jalapeño Pork, which was spicy and tasty, I had the dinner, which for 3 dollars extra included soup, egg roll and another appetizer, which was star shaped with crab paste in the middle. Prices are very family friendly here; compared to the normal NYC Chinese restaurants I am used to, this wonderful restaurant is a bargain. The Shrimp Ding sample plate was crunchy and amazing.

If you are within 20 miles of this place in NE South Bend, by all means stop there.

If you want great Asian food with a once in a lifetime experience, J.W. Chen's is your place. The owner, Jean, visits each table and personally takes your order. For first time visitors, don't bother to even look at the menu; Jean will ask you questions on what you like and then recommend the right dish for you. They will even tailor the spiciness of the dish to your liking. While she is talking with you, she communicates with the staff and before you know it, food starts appearing on the table. First timers usually receive a complimentary dish and/or vegetable. When it comes to pay the bill, expect the unexpected - it will be written with Chinese characters and US dollar prices...and probably a bit more that you are used to paying but given the great meal that you just had, no one ever complains. Highly recommend the almond crusted shrimp - no one else makes it (her recipe) and unbelievably delicious! We always order at least one portion. The crunchy beef is also amazing and the honey chicken melts in your mouth. I've eaten Chinese food throughout the US and the world and this is some of the best. The restaurant interior is nothing fancy and they move diners in and out as fast as they can, but the food more than makes up for it. If you go during a Notre Dame event (football weekend, graduation, move-in, etc.), expect long lines to eat-in. When it is crowded, many folks just order take-out and you might even have to wait for that too! If you want a dish not on the menu and Jean knows about it, she will make it for you -- my wife used to eat 3-cup chicken when she lived in Taiwan and when Jean found this out, she made it for my wife. When we visited again two months later, Jean remember her and made it again for her! Don't pass this experience up!

Good food and excellent service for large carry out order. Very reasonable prices. I do not understand the number 1 tripadvisor rating however.

Jean came by and introduced herself and asked us what we liked, "spicy". 9 out of 10 on hot scale. Well, both dishes which she recommended were NOT spicy at all:(. My husband's chicken dish was barely cooked and had huge chunks of garlic. We like garlic but it was too much. She did give us a complimentary dish of spicy green beans which were very good. Would not go out of way to eat there.
