Description: When the newly built Blue Gate Restaurant & Bakery opened it doors on August 4th, 2001 in Shipshewana, the entire town was invited over for dinner. As one of Indiana's largest restaurants, the Blue Gate comfortably seats 600 (more than the town's population). Built to reflect the surrounding community, the Blue Gate resembles a rambling white farmhouse, similar to those that dot the surrounding Amish coutnryside. An award winning restaurant serving a world famous Family-style meal that features pressure fried chicken and 3 other meats, real mashed potatoes, Amish noodles, plus lots of other sides and 25 varieties of pies to choose from

We were driving through Shipshewana, and stopped to have a dinner in this restaurant. We chose it as being in the "Amish County" we were curious to see something interesting and Amish :)

The food was very simple, but good. I usually prefer something more fancy. But this time we just wanted to see what Amish foods are like. There is plenty of food on the plates, be prepared for the doggy box. And we didn't even try "family style", as we were only two ladies, and we figured there would be no way for us to get any advantage of the family style meal. We could not even handle the individual portion.

For us the main thing was "the experience", and we got it. I liked the interior of the place, we bought some Amish bread, jams and pickles in the bakery as souvenirs, we took a ride in a horse carriage, and enjoyed watching the carriages with horses parked at the gas station - as though they were cars :)))

We tried the $15.99 all-you-can-eat meal (very limited selection of items) and were disappointed. Note: The basic meal includes fried chicken as the only meat; any other meats cost extra. The fried chicken is flavorful and juicy but the coating is extremely greasy and salty. The mashed potatoes and green beans were good, but the rest was not up to par, especially for the price. The small starter salad is basically iceberg lettuce and croutons, the noodles with chicken bits tasted "canned," and the stuffing was awful (weird mixture and tasted like it was old or going bad). There were no additional vegetables. Bread and a beverage comes with your meal. The items are brought to your table on a large tray and then the wait staff gets food refills as needed. A limited selection of pies for dessert is included in the price, and they are good about packing that as takeout if you're too full to eat it there. The staff was friendly and the service was good, but the meal is not worth the price. Next time we'll go to the Subway across the street.

Have been here numerous times and they always come through!

Some say to go to other places, but my wife and I agree that this beats them.

Best roast beef, great chicken, better veggies, beautiful, comfortable place and nice service.
The whole package.

Also have an amazing bakery in the rear, if you really need more.

Excellent beef & noodles with fresh green beans, half serving was a big serving. Husband got chicken pot pie, very good & just right for his dinner at a half serving.
Waitresses were friendly, knew their menu very well. It was clean & inviting.

Several pies to choose from including an excellent hard to find cream pies.

This meal was served family style, all you could eat and was very good and plentiful. But the pie!!!! Awesome. We ate here twice and I heard no complaints, except that everyone was tooooo full.
